It seems a lot of HAMB'ers have a different idea. But paint, stance, wheel and tire combo, upholstery, engine detailing, etc., at one time would have left no doubt as to "Custom" status. There was even a "Conservative Custom" class at national level shows for cars such as these.

Mox Miller's famous Chevy is a case in point. Though taken to the max, there are absolutely no body mods done whatsoever. Yet the car was a frequent custom sweepstakes winner.
You would never have heard anyone refer to this as "Just a lowered stocker".

Mo, that 57 Chevy belongs to a fellow Heaps CC member, Lee Pollard (57 Trucker on the HAMB) out of Hampton. And I agree, it's a nice understated truck. He's owned it since he was 14, so 35 years.

Ummm, it's a Nissan, but who really cares?

No Mo, I haven't pulled the trigger on a truck yet. Martin another Heaps member (martin_f on the HAMB) has the 36 Ford truck with the Olds mill and a 56 Olds Holiday Sedan.

Martin's Olds is a complete knockout!!! And perfect for this thread! I hadn't seen it in its completed form.
(I hope he'll jump in with some pictures of that absolute jewel 324 under the hood, with the Edmund's 2x2!)

 

That's a PhotoShop rendering I did of Martin's Olds. We've talked about splitting the factory trim and flaking the roof gold, but his wife isn't a fan of the gold (yet). It already sports the caps and skirts. Additionally, I lowered it more, shaved the door handles and emblems (may still shave the trunk) and added the scallops onto the roof.

Martin's got the new mill sitting in the car now and he's just sorting out a few more little things.

I'm new here and hope these photos show up. I sent for these from an ad in Custom Cars
magazine around 1959 while in Jr High. Not sure how to attach but will try.

Ok, They did work but are very small. I think these photos were $1.00. I
wonder if anyone here remembers either of these custom Mercs.

 

Here's another mild custom Merc photo but from my family album. My Dad's friend in Fairborn Ohio about 1942-44. Wouldn't you love to own this one today.

It's fitting that what may be the "Black Cavendish" 's last appearance in this thread as a mild custom (before the top gets chopped) should coincide with being shown at Cobo Hall. (And with the top up!) Just Super .

Here's my first car purchased brand new in late '63. A satin silver Chevy SS convertible. I worked for a Chevy dealer and immediately had them shave the body of a lot of trim, add triple tail lamps (no back ups), Lacquered dashboard and custom console insert. Definitely mild but brand new.

 

Now that's a true "Mild Custom"!

The lights remind me of a little story.
According to lore, when "Dead Man's Curve" was first conceived, the lyric ran "...and all the Jag could see were my "FRENCHED Tail lights". This was later changed to "...my SIX tail lights" (one of the truly great lines in Hot Rod Music history). And yet, I have seen this line cited as inaccurate, because "Stingrays did not have six tail lights" !!!
Now, don't that just beat all?
