Lyle's photos above capture perfectly what once defined the 'Mild Custom'.

"Back in the day", even some of these below would have been judged as 'Semi-Custom', due to the extent of their modification. (It didn't take much.)
I did, however, avoid cars with chopped tops and other modifications which would once have categorized a car as a 'Radical Custom'.

This '57 Ford hardtop features '56 PU headlight rings, '54 Chevy grille w/ extra teeth.
    Interior is beautiful R&P.

Look closely. Extended rear splash pans are molded to the body, tail lights are frenched.

Ok, shoot me, but I never cared for tri-fives, because they were way over done...
    Until I saw this one.

  9. I guess my car also fits in here:

  10. I'm not much of a rule book guy and I don't plan on entering any shows, but trying to apply the ISCA rule book to some of the cars posted here is interesting. I think what I consider mild is not mild when the rules are applied.

I grabbed a photo at random that Lyle Willits posted. I'm a shoebox guy, and I would consider this one to be a nice, mild custom. Without knowing what's under the hood, or the interior (other than I can see what looks like Tbird buckets), tried to break it down...

    Modifications requiring bodywork:
    Headlights frenched
    Taillights frenched
Hood is nosed, filled and/or peaked
    Hood scoop(?) added
    Chevy grille
    Door handles shaved
    Gas door shaved
    Frenched antennas
    Custom side trim

    Changes:
    lakes pipes
    dummy spots
    peep mirrors
    Bumper over-riders removed
    Lowered suspension
    Tbird interior

So that would make this car Semi-Custom, or Full-Custom?

    Conservative
    0-3 modifications

    Mild
    4-6 modifications

    Semi
    7-10 modifications

    Full
    over 10 modifications

    Radical
Any number of modifications, at least one of which is chopping, channeling or sectioning.

Great thread, and there's been chopped tops peppered through it since page 2.

I know that I goofed by posting a chopped top or two. They definitely do NOT belong in here. I do know better, so I'm just gonna blame it on the horrible tasting expired beer that I often consume ...

  17. Thanks Sylvian, that is truly beautiful. I would love to see it in person.

Thanks guys. I'd be happy with the first car in this thread. The last one. Or one of those in the Middle!:)

  26. Best thread on the HAMB imho. Great pics and tons of inspiration for my '54 customline.

Dad had fantastic taste in cars and clothes. I own nothing but skinny ties and narrow lapels. I can't stand wide ties and butterfly lapels.
