Even if there was no oiling issues there wouldn't have been a Turbo. Now the question is, how much $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

In the automotive world, cars with a V-8 emblem on the side generally have stronger parts. Perhaps it works the same in the world of soft drinks. My suggestion, buy a can of V-8 juice, drink most of it, pour the last few drops on the engine(what can it hurt? maybe get it's mojo workin') and try that can for your exhaust coupler. At the very least, a little double sticky tape (available at any WalMart) and you've got a fender emblem.

I wonder how many HAMBers are reading this thread, thinking "Hmmm, I know where one of these is sitting......"
You guys are making Corvairs sound cool again. It's been 48 years since my '61 ate a belt on the night of my prom, going to pick up my date. Hated that car from that day forward. In 2 more years, it'll be 50 years since that travesty, maybe then I'll forgive Corvairs, and look for another one.
But, Jim is making them more valuable with his adventure.. Didn't Edsel values spike up last year?

  7. I had a '65 Monza,white/black interior,140 hp and 4 speed,it also had a telescopic steering column.

It was a great car and fun to drive, never lost a belt.

I was on my way to pick up Brenda one Sunday morning for a early breakfast at Shoney's restaurant and stopped at a 4 way intersection, looked and saw nothing coming about half way through it I was hit on the passenger side by a 1970 Convertible Cadillac, I bounced off two cars going in the direction I had just come from went over a embankment and rolled over.

The Cadillac hit me so hard the trans axle & engine and most of the rear half of the car was scattered around the road and nearby field.

After the Police arrived they found the driver of the caddy sitting in his car, he was drunk from a all night bender,he said he never saw the stop sign and never touched his brakes until after he hit me.

The police determined he was driving in excess of 80 MPH in a 45 MPH zone.

The other people were unhurt and I was bruised and muddy but able wo walk away. HRP

BTW,Ralph Nader's unsafe at any speed is a crock! HRP

  8. Had a friend that had a swing-axle turbo Monza convertible 'back in the day'. Fun car, but tended to get light in the front end at 100 MPH. At 110, it DID get light; after his third off-road excursion (luckily with only minor car damage and soiled underwear), he decided to get something that was a bit more stable at high speeds....

At one point in my life, I had an interest in a radiator shop and we also repaired gas tanks. A Chevy dealership in San Diego was sending us one or two Corvair tanks a week for repairs. After the third one, we knew exactly where to repair the holes that allowed gas fumes to exit. Seems that the dealership pushed for the installation of passenger side mirrors on the fender to match the driver side mirror and drilled right into the top of the tank. Took pity on the service manager and told him how to avoid the problem.

Haha, lucky the drill didn't make any sparks, they'd have found the problem right away.

Didn't bring my tin snips either. Got some real clamps and a short adapter pipe and all is well with that. But the engine is running rough, so it's time for a tune up.

Time for spark plugs and a Uni-Syn.......
What gas are you running on your trip, cheap sh!t or 91 octane? The wife's Corvair will tell us in a heartbeat if we forget to put the good stuff in it.
Sounds like you're having a great time - again. Good Luck.

I drive mine on the turnpike probably once a week for 2 exits. Like I said my speedo has been dead for a while but I have no problem keeping up in the middle lane. Knowing NJ, that's at least 80mph. Not bad for what was 80hp at the crank when new. It doesn't so much feel light at speed but more reckless, and I attribute it to the flat front and belt line body.

If I get a truck in front of me it either smooths out or gets tossed around depending on the distance. The car weighs nothing.

Denis, I think your memories are distorted. The top of the fenders are about 2 feet away from the gas tank.... or the were using a very long drill bit to install those mirrors !

  18. Doesn't the fuel filler neck come up through the back of the fender on one side or the other?

The tank is in the middle of the front of the car in front of the floor toe board, between the front wheels. The filler neck is not real vulnerable, but I guess you could run a long screw into it but doubt it would leak. There are some other places you could put things to poke a hole in the tank.

The car ran fine all the way to the Seattle area. About 2000 miles so far on the trip.

    I missed that detail somehow.

    Diggin "The Thing" bumper sticker.
I had a 64 Greenbriar van. That car was just as cool as anything.
Runnin hard through a vacant lot one night we found out that rebar could be a spear.
We hit a piece of cement and this rod came in just behind the front seats and went through the roof.
We were hard aground. that poor car wouldn't come unstuck for anything.
It took a hack saw and two frantic kids about an hour to free it.
    Couldn't stop laughin.

Hilarious..and lucky. I got my RV stuck under the light standard at McDonald's one night in Ely Nevada. 302/C4, wouldn't budge. Finally after back and forth enough times it came loose, tore the ladder off the roof and I drug it, along with most of the light standard, still attached to the rear bumper, sparks flying, down Hwy 50.

    Don't spread it around.

I'm working on the Mendocino coast this week, hoped to see the rally go by but no luck so far.
