Paid 25 for a 56 chevy handiman, ran perfect, rusted out floorboards. Sold it for the same. Was given a 64 Karman Guia with 21000 miles on it for helping a coworker move, car had been in a garage for the last 5 years with a dead battery, got it running, filled the tires, put in a battery, sold it for 2500. bought my 50 chevy pu for 700, my 39 buick for under 300.

Back in the day, for me, 1964 my first car and many after into early 70's never lost any money, actually made money on all of them (IMO they all were good deals, I fixed, modified, etc.) with exception of a beautiful 56 Bel Air rag top I crashed w/o insurance.( approx $1000 car in 1965 ) In later years when coming back to car hobby, I think I made some fair deals, but not any bargains, deal of the day, etc. just trying to enjoy the car hobby at the $$$ level I'm comfortable with. I'm a believer you can enjoy the hobby at any level from clunker to best of show type ride, best part is we are all CarCrazy ! the common denominator, levels the field IMO.

Back in 2007, I bought 1 and a 1/2 disassembled '27 Model T Roadster pickups for $125. Just had to dig all of the parts out of a barn. I never had a chance to build it, but I sold all the bits for well over 15X the initial purchase price.

    Good thread.
Me: 1966. I was 15. 55 Chevy 2 door wagon. It had no motor or trans but it had a beautiful candy blue dash painted by Juniors House of Color, Lynwood CA. . $35.00. Got it running and drove it through high school. 1969: Traded a two axle trailer for a 32 Ford cabriolet body and frame. Built it, drove it and sold it in the 80's. I'd like to find that car, just for curiosity. I heard it went to New York. 1970: bought a running 59 Corvette for $550. It had a 327 and an Olds hydro :). My mom loaned me the money for that one. I paid her back. 1986 about: Bought a 32 Ford roadster body that had been butchered and welded to a dune buggy frame. $250. I think. It's all repaired and in the process of being completed as a highboy. Move on to about 2000. Bought a 67 Mustang Fastback from a tenant. It was a torn-apart hulk. It cost me $800. I'm building that right now but it's too new for the HAMB so I can't show it to you :) Oh BTW, the main parts for the 28 RP in my avatar were free..kinda. Received the body, bed and 1/2 of a frame as a thank you for building a '31 highboy tub for an old friend/business partner. Only about 6 months labor..labor of love that is.
    Regards
    Tony

I bought this for $300 delivered a month or so ago, I thought it was a pretty good deal. Cab was perfect and ended up on my ‘41. Kept the open drive banjo, front end with spindles and juice brakes for other projects. Sold the frame and some other stuff off it so basically I got paid to take the cherry cab, seat, 1940 style steering wheel and other parts.

Picked this up for $400 a couple years ago. All there except engine/trans and front seat. All the trim and bumpers were piled inside. On the bottom of the pile, which included a spare tire, was the backglass! Still in one piece. Oh, came with the pink too.

Recently handed it over to our nephew. Great guy with his head screwed on straight. Very deserving.

  11. In 2009 I was building a Model "A" Tudor for my son. We bought a steel body over here in the UK one that had been shipped from South America, Brazil I think.
It was one of a pair that came here bought and shipped by someone else. Well when we got it home and started to strip it down we discovered it was complete bag of S~~T
This put the mockers on the project and I eventually sold the body on as seen POOR quality.
After a quite a few months I was on the HAMB and spotted what looked like a really nice Tudor Body for sale.
After emailing and phone calls I purchased the body and had a friend of mine who ships over to the UK get it here. WELL IT WAS FANTASTIC, and even my friend said it was the best Body he had ever shipped over.

As you can see it was mint.

Not sure if ( Chad) 1oldrat
is still on here but thanks it was a great deal.

The other was from Bob Owens.
Thanks Bob, you helped me such a lot with a couple of things, including the COE.
I bought a Model "T" Coupe from Bob, again what a great piece of kit it was. The unfortunate thing for me was after I shipped it over I had a few personal problems which needed to be sorted and I HAD TO SELL. such a pain.
    This was the "T"

$600 running/driving. Rebuilt eveything. Drove it for 10 years. Dabbled with being a hippy so I gave it away to “heal” my “Chi”. I now cry every time I see a ‘57 Ranchero on the HAMB and wish I had a time machine to go back and kick my shaggy ass.

  14. In 63 got a 40 tudor delux with good body, black and white rolled and pleated interior, white perforated headliner that needed a engine for $75.00. Put a 265 in it and drove it to high school. In Germany in 68 I blew the engine in my 56 one owner Volkswagen. I asked the dealer that rebuilt the engine($93) if he had a loner. He said he had a running 51 split window that needed a drivers window. My Wife piped up and said we'll give you 50 marks ($12.50). We were with my next door neighbor and his Wife. Between the four of us we came up with the money and drove it home. Couldn't afford to ship it home, gave to my neighbor.

  15. I bought my 36 Chevy pickup with a title off my high school shop teacher and friend Nick Komarchuk in 1979 for $125, a trashed SBC short block and a good lawn mower. It was one of his deceased brothers trucks , also had 2 37 Chevy trucks that I shoulda bought, oh well. Bought my 36 Ford in 93, paid 2,000 for a very solid and complete car WITH a clean Illinois title, not as good of deal as the Chevy but good none the less. Then my Wife found me a 38 humpback with no engine ,trans or title but otherwise good for 500, ended up unloading that one and doubled my money. This summer I picked up a 25-26 Dodge fairly complete, no title for 100 clams, best deal yet. Mitch

Was given my '42 Fargo from my uncle, my '46 Chevy Fleetmaster was given to me by my wife's aunt after her nephew "lost" the engine and another's took the clock out with a hammer, was given a '56 Meteor sedan as a Christmas gift from my father in law but had to pay $1000 for a '56 Meteor Rideau hard top, inherited my dad's '69 Ford LTD, paid $800 for a TR6, and paid $5000 for a package deal on three '47 Buicks with a convertible a Sedanette and a sedan parts car. To top it all off I paid $2000 to my uncle for a '32 5W with a rebuilt model B engine with a C head and two rebuilt trannies. Not bragging but it explains my user name.

I have bought several Hamb friendly cars at a good deal. but probably the best is this 34 Ford 5W coupe for $4000 that I bought at a garage sale in 2006. It was marketed poorly by the PO... as he only had the rolling chassis with the body shell at the garage sale with a tag on it saying $4k. I asked him if he had the other parts which he did have, but they were located in his dad's chicken coupe across town. I sold it to a HAMB member in Minnesota. 34 5W.jpg 34 5W (2).jpg 34 5W.jpg

Sweet. An old dirt track coupe on the back would be perfect.

  19. In 1983 at 16 yrs old, I bought a running driving 53 Ford pickup 350 sbc, 400 trans B&M quik Silver shifter and Crager s/s all around for $400. My 53 Ford Customline Coupe I traded an 80s El Camino for that I had $1200 into.

    Hello,

We were just making a list of what cars we owned and where they were when we sold them. Over the years since 1957, there have been quite a long list, but only 6 out of all of those cars are/were HAMB friendly. We had a 1951 Olds two door sedan that originally was a pale yellow, then, sold it to my brother’s friend in late 57 after it got painted a pale, lime green. That 2 door Olds sedan started the whole hot rod/cruiser mentality.

sold that complete 671 292 SBC ($900) to someone in the Midwest

Drag News Jan 1961, 6 months after the 40 Willys accident at Lions. We got a great deal on the original 283 with 6 Strombergs, so we sold the finished 671 292 SBC for an excellent price.
    3. upload_2018-9-18_5-26-57.png My first 40 Ford Sedan Delivery,w/Flathead last seen in Huntington Beach, CA 1965. Bought in Long Beach for $160 and sold for $360.

Late 1964-1965 bought a new Chevy El Camino, sold it in 1975 for $600, Dana Point

327, auto, A/C full upholstery, etc. Bought for $2100 (71) in Santa Ana.
    Sold for $2700 in 1976

The best deal? The first 40 sedan delivery. The most memories, tie between the 58 Impala and the 1965 El Camino. Our history of cars in 50s-60s would be the only cars that are HAMB friendly. The following cars to this day were/are fun daily drivers to get on in life. They are/were a part of our hot rod/drag race history.

They were all good deals for us at the time. They were all sold to friends/acquaintances later on, for a good deal to the buyers. We were not in the business of making money, but enjoying those lasting memories of the old cars from the time period. That last 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery was the most complete car/daily driver for us. They all served the intended purpose…cruising in style.

But for weeks, we have been going over whatever records/notes from that time period and could not figure out who we sold it to in 1976. At the time, we had just sold a custom 1971 Harley Sportster to a young couple from the South Bay. That was the most striking sale for us. (lots of anti-mainstream memories) We remember that sale and the aftermath, well. So, the 2nd sedan delivery sale draws a blank other than the amount.

  22. I was at a local cruise-in and overheard the P/O telling his buddy about the car... So I asked him about it and when he told me the price and it had a title , I immediately made arrangements to go look at it..Took one look and pulled the trigger ...Took the P/O three weeks to dig it out of his garage... Guess it pays to be nosy at times !!!

  23. The guy at the local Hodaka dealership told me that they were actually assembled here even though the pieces were made in Japan. Makes them at least as American as Toyota. :D :D :D

The '70s for me was 2 flatheads (45" and 80") a panhead and a myriad of whatever car I could buy cheap when I needed one.

My favorite car from the '70s was my '46 Coupe, today it would be a deal I think. I paid 800 for it and had to put the caddy mill back in it to drive it home. The only thing that made it a deal back then was that it was out of style but just enough to be a cool ridin' around car.

  25. Free 1948 F-1 was the best deal / worst deal, it was given to me by the family of my
best friend who passed away suddenly.

1948 FORD coupe in 1963 for one hundred dollars. Missing right rear fender. Found a new old stock one for four dollars.

First saw mine sitting in 1975. I was a kid then. Ultimately bought it a decade later for the princely sum of one dollar.

In 1975 I bought my 39 Chevy sedan for $450, 283 with a cast iron glide, had some issues but drove it home. Came with a 56 Corvette dual quad setup (in the trunk) so I think I did OK there, still have both. Six years ago bought this sedan delivery for $500, a little rough but has a title and drove it off the trailer (carefully, no brakes).

My Studebaker pickup. Bought it for $400 on Ebay delivered. Found out the chassis it was on was a 1937 Marmon Harrington 4 wheel drive. I sold the chassis for $1500. So the truck made me $1100.
