image.jpeg image.jpeg Did some work today on the roof while I wait for parts.

This particular roof is not from this car but is in fact a 5 window unit.

I received it in 3 pieces, not cut in 3 pieces but torched in 3 pieces....it's a bit rough but fixable. The fella I got it from..... If I remember correctly... Said it was on his 34 roadster?? Yea, that's what I thought! Anyways... It'll be just fine with some manipulation and heat.

I love gas welding, nice soft malleable weld with workable metal.

Just think of all the custom bodies that were built in the 1920's and 1930's with gas welding, filed smooth, with little filler. Bob

Man progress is a good thing my old coupe looked like they chopped it with a chain saw they lapped every thing then they channeled it the cross member was made out of bed railings and they could not weld but they knew how to cut shit up .It was the only 32 frame I have ever had to threw away ! I had to replace my cowl and many hours replacing panels keep going !

Started making the subrails this morning, transferred the frame rails onto some heavy duty matting, then traced the patterns on to some nice thick plate.

Tomorrow I'll start in the sub rail skirts, those will tie the A and B pillars together and allow me to hang the quarters.

Great to see the pieces going together. Just wondering if Fordor front doors and Coupe doors are the same length? Bob

    Bob,

I have both coupe and 4 door sedan.

    There's actually a few differences.

    1) The door top height
    2) The actual length is different. The 4 door sedan door is 3/8" Shorter.
    3) Door handles. The 5 window appears to have only a handle on the passenger door with no lock? The 4 door has both a lock and handle.

Oh, and I'm not sure if it's just the doors I'm using...maybe they got tweaked at some point....but they don't close all the way, let me say it another way, the doors close to the point where the A pillar and the jamb are fully closed but the rear of the door doesn't meet the B pillar. That's why in one of the photos you can see I removed the inner door panel.

My dad also used Fordor doors on his Coupe and had the same interference problem at the A pillar. I think Fordors sit wider over the frame at the B pillar so the doors are made slightly different on the front. That was pushing 20 years ago, so I don't remember for sure what we did. But I believe we got them to fit by bending the hinges some and possibly taking a sliver out of the inner front panel and bending the front door edge back.
To make the top back corner of the door fit, I know we slit it at an angle from the corner of the window opening going upwards towards the top outer corner. We pulled it apart until the corner was closer to square. Then filled the pie shape gap.

    Corn fed.... Exactly!

I removed the inner door panel than made a slice at the bottom inner door panel, this allows the A pillar to be rolled/tipped in more... And let's the door fully close. And I'll trim the upper inner panel later.

Wow, lot of skill and background knowledge need for this job. Seems really fitting that much of this car(S) was cut up with a gas axe and is being rebuilt with gas welds. Look forward to seeing the 32 that everybody wants when you're done with this.

    Haha......

A lot of research and learn as I go.

I have a few more cars / projects in the same disarray as this one.... They seem to find me...,or maybe I find them? But none the less I enjoy the challenge.

    Just a thought.....
Why channel it? Seems like it would be easier to just reconstruct it sitting on top of the frame. For sure, it would make reconstructing the floor easier. I like hiboys......you may not.
    Keep up the great work!
