In March, I and Olav are flying into California to host our first Customs by the Sea car show in Santa Barbara, California together with the Oilers car club during the Santa Barbara Drags. We arrive March 2, and we're staying abroad for two full weeks.

While we're there we're also going on a tour, and for two weeks we will be hunting folks of interest, old photos and stories in California and surrounding states. We have been planning this roadshow for a couple of years now, and finally, it will happen. We will bring our scanner, camera, tape recorder, and laptop, and our mission is to preserve and share as much hot rod and custom car history as possible. The clock is working against us, and each month we are losing pioneers and friends in the field. Pioneers filled with great stories and knowledge.

If you have old photos and stories to share, or you know someone that has that we should stop by before it is too late, please get in touch with me here or through [email protected]. We already have some exciting meetings booked in, but we still have room for more!

We did the same thing in 2016 when we were hosting the Customs by the Sea car show in Pismo. Back then we only had a couple of days, but luckily that gave us time to stop by Glenn and Forey Wall in Downey. At the time Glen was 99 years old. Forey was 102. The two brothers were in a good health, and they still maintained their home, drove around, went shopping, and banking on their own. Forey was still making a buck selling used cars, while Glen still worked on them. October 22, 2018 we woke up to the sad news that Glen had passed away, 101 years old. We are so greatful that we had the chance to stop by Glen and Forey before it was too late. They shared some amazing stories with us that we have published in Hop Up and Gasoline Magazine. Much of it is also available on Kustomrama, but there is plenty more to come. A sneak peek can be found here: https://kustomrama.com/wiki/The_Glen_and_Forey_Wall_Photo_Collection

We will be sharing more info about our adventure as we get closer to the arrival date. Ideas about people we should stop by or try to get a hold of are also welcome!

Krankers of San Bernardino car club member Hilton Vail is one of the guys we are visiting in March. Hilton has a stack of old photos and stories from his Krankers days that he wants to share with us. Hilton lives close to San Diego, so we will be in that area sometime between March 2 and March 7, in case you know anyone else in the area we should stop by. Also, let us know if you have any questions we should ask him during our session. More info and photos of his sharp looking Fairlane 500 can be found here: https://kustomrama.com/wiki/Hilton_Vail's_1957_Ford

anyone going to Santa Barbara this weekend?

  7. This is great! I hope your trip is going well. Are you planning on releasing these as a video or possibly a podcast? It reminds me a lot of what is being done with the American Hot Rod Foundation via video and podcast and what @travisfromkansas is doing with his Chrome Pipes and Pinstripes podcast. Keep up the great work!
