    It was 33 deg out last night but I still got my butt out there and scrubbed up the frame last night.

    And then it was white! I had enough left over white rustoleum left over from my Model A build to paint it...... till I knocked my Harbor Freight gun over.... luckly tractor supply is open pretty late...

    I guess you can add another $45 (gallon of white and hardener) to the total.... since we will use some more of this paint.

    Build total = $171

    Anybody have pics of a sbc mounted in a tri 5 frame using the sbc side mounts, not the original front mounts. We are thinking about setting the engine back a little for better weight transfer, and since we don't have a fire wall... why not! But if you have some pics, we would appreciate it!

    No pics of my motor mounts, but if youre sliding it back a bit itll be super easy to fab your own. Take a look at the ones they sell and modify them for sitting back. There are some real cheap ones, and nice ones out there, I sent back 2 sets before chosing what ones to weld into my 57

  6. I don't have any pics but the easiest side mounts to use are Camaro mounts. You will have to come up with a couple of 7/16 bolts for the motor mount bolts a piece of pipe ( 7/16-1/2 ID) and some 2x1/4 flat bar. No hill for a stepper right?

    Very cool project. Motor mounts should be a pretty straight forward deal. Summit has pics of them in their catalog, but I bet you can fab 'em up

  11. find a oldsmobile toranado front wheel drive and graft that455 engine trans combo to the tri five frame. instant 13 second car on the cheap.

    Great thread. looking forward to how this project proceeds. As with all projects "mission creep" is a real concern. Creep may have started with your $45 worth of chassis paint. You may want to hit your E.T. and budget goal before any paint at all.

    lots of guys would buy 4:56 gears from Chevy for their tri-5 Chevys back in the day. The rear should hold up if you have a automatic and don't go crazy with slicks. Check the Tri-5 boards for parts. Good luck with your build.

    55 - 64 Chevy rear axels are a lot stronger than they get credit for. 57 - 64 pumpkins are heavier castings than 55 - 56's though. The posi unit is the same as an 8 3/4 Chrysler, but with coarser splines on the axel shafts.

    My 55 still has it's original rear axel with a 1963 posi & 4:88 gears. Runs mid 13's / low 14's, (with Hurst pie crusts), without any problems. Did go to aftermarket axel shafts, though.

    Thank for all the feedback on the engine mounts, I put a bid in on and motor / trans mount kit on ebay, but it was turned down.....

    Questions of the night-

    1- Polyurethane or Rubber bushings? Is it worth the extra money? We may auto-cross this dude a little too.

    2- "Free" Powerglide or $400 rebuilt / shift kit turbo 350?

    Yeah, I promised my wife I would do all I can not to die doing this, so we are trying to make the chassis as safe as possible, and you can always fix quarter panels, but pulling the chassis back out takes some effort! Don't worry you will be impressed by just how little we do in terms of body work. ;)

    You would probably be best to go with a clutch trans, even if its a free 3spd Saginaw , as far as rear goes if the one you have is not in working order find a transplant , outer wheel bearings are $100 ea probably find a useable 9" for $100 complete and find 3.73 4.11 and 4.56 gears out of trucks quite often

    Love the project. If you get a couple like minded hot rodders together it should work out. Most of the members on here have 1/3 of a car in parts piled up, use or trade to get what you need.
