Title pretty much sums it up. Seen yes and no online. Don’t mean to open a can of worms :rolleyes:
    Thanks :)

    For fuel lines.

  3. I think a proper AN fitting should need no tape to seal. Put a little lube on threads before assembly. Done.

No. An AN fitting seals on the flare. No need for anything else except thread lube or anti seize.

If you've already seen...yes AND no...why are you asking again ? Is something here gonna change your mind ?

    "Fuel line" don't say much..!
    NPT or AN ?

Actually doesn't matter...NO in both cases.
    1. AN has its own seal surface.
    2. I'd never use "tape", not even on your fittings..!

I've seen too much of it clogging too many peoples fuel and oil filters and the lines. Along with the related pumps.

Nope. Like my dad told me "if it hurts after sex, you did it wrong". They do make conical seals that you can use if the flare is damaged. Not cheap but works to fix a seeping joint.

Thanks, @ Mike VV, I wanted to hear what the experts here on the H.A.M.B. have to say.

Which end of the fitting are you talking about? The 37 degree flare end needs nothing on the sealing surface. Some guys lube the threads a bit. If the other end is NPT, and sealing fuel, a fuel rated sealant is used. No tape. Tape has it's place. Some swear by it, others at it. I don't use it in a fuel system. Others do. I guess it depends if you approach it as a mechanic or a plumber.

sealants are only for pipe thread , as stated above A.N. fittings seal on their own seat ,,
that seat is a 37 deg angle and also cannot be confused with regular flare or double flare as those seat at 45 deg angle and are in no way compatible ..

All that means is in every case it (tape or sealant ) was used incorrectly.

On fuel lines the pipe thread side I use Permatex #2. Some use Teflon tape or sealant.

Flare fitting don't use sealant on the flare regardless of the degree of flare.

A drop of lubricant on threads is all. Also don’t have to be tightened with a gorilla grip. I don’t have them but they make aluminum wrench’s to tighten them that should tell you something.

Lets start from the begging. AN (Army/Navy) fittings where developed around the second world war. An AN fitting is a 37 degree flare. There are hundreds of references of how these are used in military applications, and I have never seen one that mentions a sealant. So if the developer of the product does not use a sealant, I have to question why anyone else would think it necessary.
