The final part of making this bumper is the dressing out of the weld and smoothing it to a finish that is ready for chrome plating.

The process is to file the area using a body file like the one shown in the photo below. This shows up the high and low spots. The low spots are then planished with the flipper, using a dolly with a suitable shape on the underside. The panel is filed again and any remaining low areas will need futher planishing. This is repeated until the entire panel is smooth.

In the photo above it is getting close to being done.

Hammers the same as you have shown.

I did a bit of reading in some very old sheet metal books that I have to check that I had my facts straight (long time since I learned this stuff) Hollowing is done with a hollowing hammer and over a hollow, blocking is the smoothing part of the process where a hammer with a shape close to the final surface shape is used.

I sanded off the last of the zink coating and sanded it to polished finish so that any ripples or imperfections would show up.

It just sanded by hand its not polished to a finish ready for chrome, thats for the plater to do.

    Thanks for this.

Your post along with the bits of your videos I found from the link in your signature has me rethinking what I "need".

Could a person make this from stainless? Maybe with the aid of heat?

    Thanks! not problem.

I have not done a lot of work in stainless so I am not an expert on the stuff but if you got the right grade (some are more malleable than others) I am shure it could be done. It would be hard work by hand though.

Wow! This is really cool work, really opens up the mind to different ways of creating something and not buying it. How long would you estimate this took you to make (so I can multiply that time by 10 and add 1000 minutes and be somewhere close :))?
