TECH: Transmission cover

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by southpaw-customs, Nov 7, 2005.

  1. I find making parts out of wire first helps define the shape in size and keeps me from making too many screwups.

The transmission is a Ford fmx and it is in 40 Ford delivery.

Here's what I came up with.

    a couple of passes.

upper wheel has a innertube on it.

    a little more wheeling.

    now for the bellhousing piece.

    starting to take shape.

    trial fit.

some hammering to make the reverse curve.

    a little smoothing.

one more time with a narrow lower anvil.

It has a little bit of a jog here. I just put it in the vise and gave it a little offset. Before I made the flange. I made the flange with a cresent wrench a little at a time then I ran it through the wheel again.

    Here it is installed.

    And one from the right.

Hope this is usefull for someone.

man that looks like shit, could you make that a little cleaner looking next time, nothin like shoty workmanship. just makes you sick.

  4. Please post pics of all your floor all the way to the back door. I have a 40 SD that needs floor replacement. I wish you had made duplicates. What gas tank are you using? I am using the orig. Thanx, Dave

  5. I only replaced the metal floor boards. The tongue and grooved wood ones that are behind the seats that run to the rear door were useable. I moved the stock tank to the area below the floor where the spare tire went. Here is a picture of the floor I made to replace the rusted one.

  9. Is it a 3 piece, R,L, and tunnel? Are you interested in making another one? One reason I would like to see the rest is, did you the cast brackets at the rear of the door post? Thanx, Dave

  10. Yes it is in 3 pieces. I could make another one. The brackets were still in good condition.

  11. The work looks great, sent you a PM about it.

I used and old Wheel Horse tractor hood. Worked good. Just sectioned it vertically to the correct size and attatched it to the floor with some 'L' brackets and screws.

I've seen people use tires for upper wheels, is yours a tire or did you wrap an inner tube around a steel upper wheel? How'd you attach the inner tube to the upper anvil?? thanks - very good work!

    Really nice work....

did anyone else notice that that FMX looks more like a C4?

  21. Dan the upper wheel does have a innertube on it , it just slips over the upper wheel and works like a rubber band.

I have since that picture went to a go kart slick for the upper wheel.

Attached is a picture of a lower door skin I made for a 56 stude pickup using the gokart slick.

  22. .... thats as close to metal art work as you're gonna see!!!!! Just outstanding talent...and just in the nick of time on the wireform trick... I'm now gathering up material & methods to start the trans tunnel fab on my TrackT........and that tip helped a ton....Thanks Stan

  23. Hi Squirrel,

Thanks and you are correct it is a C4  when I started on it had a FMX.

  24. Thanks everyone for the kind words. I'm glad it has helped some of you with your build.
