I want to lower the back of a 36 ford can I just add longer shackles or is there an issue with this?

Yes and yes...normal traditional way of lowering, but it allows sway, so adding a panhard from a '48 or some equivalent would be a good idea.

It works for me. The roadster doesn't have a lot of weight up high but I have no adverse handling problems.

I made a set of shackles for my A to put a '38 front spring on the rear. Shackles are about 4 in long. Today during my lunch hour, I reversed my front leaf with a big 'ol press. Might consuder this as an option. Side by side, identical springs ended up about 2 in different after I reversed the one.
