DO NOT use it for aluminum!

It has a very violent reaction to aluminum. It's entertaining, almost scary and makes crazy toxic clouds. I wasn't thinking one time and tried to do this in a pie tin. The chemical ate through the bottom in about 10 seconds!

I have heard of using other chemicals for aluminum with the same resist.

You may be able to achieve the aluminum etch with a 25% muriatic, 75% water solution. If you try it do it outdoors, mixing and all, don't need to get sick.

Great stuff! If you don't mind a dumbass FNG question, how do you cut the shape out without bending the hell out of, and marring the surface?

If it's thin like the C-51 tags I use snips to cut close, then I use the stone on my bench grinder to get closer, finishing up with a file then sandpaper.

Thick stuff like the dash inserts above I use an angle grinder and a file then sandpaper.

  13. kirk those dash inserts are top notch. I was thinking of making a small shop sign to hang outside of my garage. I wonder how the brass would hold up to doing both sides... obviously at different times.

Just Curious are other colors possible other than black on the brass? I know I have seen other colors before but I think they were silk screened on the brass.

Whatever color of spraypaint you find.

  23. Kirk,
Just curious...what's the thinnest metal you've tried this on? I've got a use for etching some .015-.020...

Can you think of any issues with trying it on the thinner metal?

You would just have to be more aware of how deep t was etching, but I don;t see why you couldn't do it.

  25. This post sucks Kirk, you are totally gay. I mean that in a good way!:D
I have seen this before, but this is pretty much the best step-by-step so far. I really liked the detail on the small headlamp tag; that must have been a challenge.

I need to try this. One question, do the fumes give a good buzz???

Saw your awesome tech post on the Jockey, and immediately thought of how bitchin' a custom "4-LOKO" tag would be on a CB-powered drag bike... dibs!

Awesome tech, I must try this. Seems like a relatively low cost way to really dial in the details of the build. I love the inserts on the legion, thanks for posting.
