I recently picked up a roadster pickup and it was missing half of the hinges. It had the door side but not the cowl. I couldn't stand to pay the crazy money they wanted for a new set so decided to build my own. I'm sure others have done the same but I couldn't find threads on them so figured, What the hay? I have $6 in the supplies and just used common tools.

You'll need some 5/8 rod and some strap.

Next cut off a section of the rod long enough to make the sections and drill down the middle with a 1/4 drill bit.

File these to fit the missing sections of hinge. Make sure they spin freely but don't wobble. WP_20160820_14_33_44_Pro.jpg

Then cut a section of plate to fit in the hinge pocket and weld it to the new sections. I put the hinge pin in place in order to keep everything lined up. WP_20160820_15_30_37_Pro.jpg WP_20160820_15_30_51_Pro.jpg

And that's it. Nothing fancy but will do the job just fine. I still need to make the others. You could easily make both halves of the hinge using the same method.

Use your lathe so the holes are centered. Isnt the tab supposed to be bent near the round stock?

If I had a lathe I would have and not from the pictures that I've seen. This hinge fits in there and the door closes. If you have a better picture of a hinge, post it up please.

    Very nice!
I suppose if one was fabricating both hinge halves, he could bolt the plates to the jamb and door, then position/shim the closed door in place. Then position the drilled rod pieces in place with hinge pin/shims and carefully tack weld. Disassemble for final welding and finishing.

I got both sides done and the doors open and close smoothly so I'd mark this down as a success. WP_20160831_14_24_36_Pro.jpg

Ha, It would be such slow progress, I'm afraid everybody would lose interest. I'll still probably start one.
