I recently picked up a roadster pickup and it was missing half of the hinges. It had the door side but not the cowl. I couldn't stand to pay the crazy money they wanted for a new set so decided to build my own. I'm sure others have done the same but I couldn't find threads on them so figured, What the hay? I have $6 in the supplies and just used common tools. You'll need some 5/8 rod and some strap.
Next cut off a section of the rod long enough to make the sections and drill down the middle with a 1/4 drill bit.
Then cut a section of plate to fit in the hinge pocket and weld it to the new sections. I put the hinge pin in place in order to keep everything lined up.
And that's it. Nothing fancy but will do the job just fine. I still need to make the others. You could easily make both halves of the hinge using the same method.
If I had a lathe I would have and not from the pictures that I've seen. This hinge fits in there and the door closes. If you have a better picture of a hinge, post it up please.
Very nice! I suppose if one was fabricating both hinge halves, he could bolt the plates to the jamb and door, then position/shim the closed door in place. Then position the drilled rod pieces in place with hinge pin/shims and carefully tack weld. Disassemble for final welding and finishing.
Ha, It would be such slow progress, I'm afraid everybody would lose interest. I'll still probably start one.
