  1. Ya not quite sure how anybody could consider a car with a minitruck stance a taildragger. Very confusing to me .

It may not qualify as a taildragger to some but it is to me. Soon, it'll be bagged in the back and really drag! Anyway, I learned taildragger, uphill and a 1/4 tank of gas don't mix. We were on our way from Oregon to Viva 2013 and were climbing the grade up by lake Shasta.

My Ford will have shiny paint very soon...my friend Octavio has done the bodywork and paint and he sprayed my jambs last week. My Ford is lower in the rear than the front, so it's a taildragger in my book :)

I always thought the term tail dragger was a term that carried over from aviaition to automotive, meaning the frontend is higher than the rear end.

The pictures don't show it as well but the nose is definately higher. Once I build my new chassis, the ass end will drag!

The photo below perfectly illustrates the Custom Car term taildragger for me.
A long time ago I read an article about early custom cars and an old-timer explained that the term taildragger came from the looks of a dog.
The dog's head it the nose, up in the air, the four legs/shoulders of the dog are the four fenders, and the tail of the dog is the trunk, dragging low on the ground.

So ever since I read this to me, personal opinion, the term Taildragger stands for cars from 1948 and older that have separate fenders...

  11. I can't believe I'm going to disagree with Rikster , but as long as I've been into this stuff (and according to my 79-year-old father) taildragger refers to stance, not body style. My personal taste says anything later than '54 is getting outside the range, but I've never heard of a line being drawn for this particular term.

  12. Pre-'48 fenders= Taildragger
    Post-'48 quarterpanels= Leadsled

Andrew you will pay for disagreeing with the Rikster! ;)

  13. Yeah, I was afraid of that. :D

(but a leadsled with a speedboat stance is still a taildragger) :p

  14. My old 40 Merc and Larry Purcell's 41 coupe at the first KKOA meet in 1980.

    They both should qualify.

I actually did know they were not the same car, or the same year. When I said "here's another one" I was talking about taildraggers.

"so it's a taildragger in my book"

Quite so Rob....I agree, and a very nice one at that ! According to Rik, none of the 49-51 Mercs would qualify. I guess Harry Bradley was wrong when he compiled the list of 10 of the very best early 49-51 Mercs, comparing them to the speed boat stance.

Its not about being right or wrong.
Its a personal preference on the meaning of the word "Taildragger"

Rob's Shoebox has a wonderful speed boat stance and is a fantastic custom. And so are the cars listed in Harry Bradley's 10 best early 1949-51 Mercury's. But to me they do not fit in the description of a Taildragger.
And that is a personal opinion.

However... Rob did me a favor and "fixed" the "problem" for me.
