picked up these federal mogul thermo flow ford flathead 21 stud 2 piece heads last week and wanted to share with everyone. cant find any info about them there in great shape.
Don't they have a water gallery in them to cool the top end better? If so there two piece as they cant be cast as one.
WOW those are gorgeous I am looking forward to hearing more about what hey were designed for and or why they were designed in the first place. Will
Some of the most interesting things get posted here on the HAMB. Do you plan on using them on an engine? They obviously would require a gasket between the two halves, but where would you find one, or two? At the very least, they'll make fine garage art. Nice find! Butch/56sedandelivery.
Hey lowlid, here is another post of someone with two piece alloy heads. He is in the Netherlands! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=322107
I believe Federal Mogul was responding to a need when they marketed those heads, as they were far superior to the factory pieces. They probably addressed the cooling problem those hot water eights were famous for (kinda hard to cool something with that much exhaust port running through the water jackets, ever wonder why Caddy had the exhaust up top?). Seems like NAPA sold those as well as many other parts stores. As far as the gaskets are concerned, you could form them in place from some high quality gasket material, or take advantage of the great strides the chemical industry has made in the last 50 years.
I believe that they are the same heads used by Bobby McGee to build his flathead in 1946 although I think he used 24 stud heads? Im just not sure if McGee used Federal Mogul heads or Kogel heads? Flathead guys? Rat
i bet they will look pretty nice all polished up, whos going to do the 3D scan and cnc some out of aluminum?
Great Score ! Those were a well thought out design for the over heating problem . Shame they didn't take off better . I guess everyone was making some kind of special head back then . Great piece of history ! Hope to see one someday .
I think Savage might be running a set of those on his truck? Might check with him and see what he knows.
Maybe originally for marine use? Salt water wouldn't eat 'em. Copper wash the block and run 'er for years!
Rare but not unusual. Several "name" early hot rods used these heads. They are very expensive when you can find them available from someone who knows what they are.
These heads are way differant from McGee's. If I'm understanding right the cast iron part would be the other half of the water jacket? BTW, Cast part would look good chromed with polished bronze.
Damn I didn't even notice that. There are probably two different designs for the flathead depending on what vintage flatty it is.
Great find! My good buddy worked for Federal Mogul back in the day. He was a test pilot for them and kept lots of stats.... let me know if you come up with a blank, I'll get you some more info. Enjoy!
I came across a set a few years back.I asked a guy about them and he said they weren't that successful. Sure look cool and they are better than stock.
I hate to let these go , had alot of people wanting to buy them. Would be interestet in trading for a good 1933 1934 ford coupe project or make me an offer I cant refuse!!!!!
