I've been working double time on my AMX lately, so I haven't made time for anything traditional lately. But I needed a break, so jumped at the chance when one of the women from work invited me and a buddy up to her uncle's place, which I'd heard tales of over the last few months.

From the street, it's just another farm, but once we climb the hill out back, we come to this copse of trees that harbors perhaps a hundred old cars, silently rotting away.

Story goes, her uncle wanted to open an auto repair shop back in the 1960s, so he started collecting parts cars and sticking them up in his woods. Well, the repair shop never came to be, but people were still bringing him junk cars for a few years.

He only lets selected few people back there and isn't looking to sell anything off, though his niece said he might sell to my buddy and me.

There was also supposedly a bear up in the woods, but I suppose he was still in hibernation. Was cool to see all the car and parts just lying around, with no scavengers to come around busting out taillamps or windshields. The niece said she loves to go up there just to visit and said we're welcome to go back with her any time. Didn't talk to the uncle, but this farm is about 10 minutes from my house.

Sad living here in the north. Our stuff just rusts away. But then again that makes the stuff that survives worth more!!

    COOL PICS...... thanks

Thanks for the pic's. Those are great. To bad you couldn't talk him into letting you sell them off so they could be saved before it's to late.
    Love those old sedan deliveries.

what is the point in not selling any of it off??? does he think he is gonna live forever? or that that stuff is gonna be worth ANYTHING if it sits there another 30 year and rots away to nothing???? WTF!!?? that just pisses me off. either shit or get off the stash of old tin!!!

I looked at those pix, imagining what it felt like for you to discover this place.
What a surreal rush, huh? I've found a couple similar places, but it's been years...To stumble upon this nowdays would be so rare...You're a lucky guy...

    So, is this niece single???

Daniel, I take it that's in VT? I live in Addison, up near the southern end of Lake Champlain. There's a place like this not 200 feet down the road from me, too. Nice photos, thanks for sharing.

Growing up in Pennsylvania, I can assure you there isn't a car there that has any resemlence of a floor or rocker panels. These stubborn people just don"t get it. At this point in time all he has is a bunch of stainless steel. I've been to some of these yards, and the cars disinegrate when you try to get them out of the mud. Too bad!

Another old fart who thinks he's got gold and won't sell. He will kick the bucket and everything will get crushed to settle the estate.

I'm origionally from the northern Pennsylvania/ southern New York area and as already been posted terminal rust has already invaded most of those cars. there are undoubtably a lot of parts that could be salvaged but you'll never get anything in the way complete cars worth resurecting out of there. That is unless thery were dropped there in the last few years. It is sad to see these stashes but you've got to realize these vehicles were deposited where they rest when they had NO value except for the ocassional part of sheetmetal patch. You will note she said that people would just drop off these cars (not expecting to get paid I suspect) as they were not wanted/needed, only required to be disposed of.

Thank you for posting the photos, hard to believe that much stuff is still out there. Just think what it was like 35 years ago, a find like that would have cars from the early to mid 1930's. It was great back in the late 1960's when I got my license and would tour the back roads and find stuff in yards and tucked away behind buildings. Young guys today will never know what that was like.

I knew a fella back in WV that had a stash of cars in the woods, mostly 60-70's cars, a couple of 50's. About 15-30 years ago, he parted cars for a living. It was cool seeing these old cars, I really wanted to pull one out and do something with it, but there was nothing in the floors.. the entire bottoms would be rusted out. Like said, good for small parts only.

I'm divided about yards like that... on one hand, i'd like to drag the cars out, sell them, get them in someone's hands who might do something with them. On the other hand, there's just something very serene about a bunch of old rust hidden away like that. I've always wanted a yard art car, justa old rust bucket parked in the yard just to look at. Must be a WV thing...

There's something much like that near me, although even bigger. Same game though- the old fart (who may even be dead now, and his kids own it) thinks everything's made of only slightly tarnished gold. Bumpers are $500, a whole car with no drivetrain or suspension is $1,000.

He's got some nice stuff out there. The one time I went through, I saw no less than three cars with early Hemis, there's an early sixties Buick Centurion that was damn near immaculate, an early sixties Caddy with lots of rare options (like the self-dimming headlights, etc) and so on. Ramblers, Metropolitans, first-gen Chargers, Crown Vics, thirties Caddy Sedanette.

The family is mean, doesn't like people. The place is NOT open to the public, people stopping in to inquire are damn near run off with a shotgun. There's at least 200 cars out there, some dating to the 20s, at least one, I saw, with a 12" tree growing between the front bumper and body, bending both.

One of these days, something will happen to the family, or they'll decide to retire from whatever it is they do and sell out, right about now when scrap steel prices are sky-high, and somebody'll bring in a crusher and scrap every inch of it.

What's with people like that? That goddam bumper is so valuable he'll take no less than $500 for it, and is more than happy to let it rot than take even $10 under that... but then will be happy to pocket the $10,000 he'll clear out of scrapping a quarter million in usable parts?

Why don't these old farts discover Ebay? They could cherry-pick maybe a dozen select items a week and make thousands.

    Doc.

Cool. I think it's great that there are still places like that. I don't get too upset that the guys like him don't sell anything. It's kinda like ripping into King Tut's tomb and packing everything off.
Sad thing is I have seen a few of those collections go to the crusher in recent years. One guy I knew had a bunch of old cars but I had never ventured back in from the road. Just drove past and seen all the worthless 70s junk out front, until I saw the semi trucks coming out of there with a 56 Ford sedan delivery, a 58 Bonneville and some othe cool stuff. Too late then.

Wow. Glad y'all enjoy the photos.

The early snowmobile was a Scorpion. My buddy who came with me went apeshit over it - he's into vintage snowmobiles and told us that Scorpion only lasted a few years in the 1960s before Arctic Cat bought them.

The whole shebang is just over the border in NY... Deyo, you're definitely coming to see it next time I go.

Oh, and the niece is single...

Like I said, I didn't get the chance to talk with the uncle, so he could simply have no idea what "all that old junk" is worth nowadays. I plan to go back and speak with him, though, tell him to at least think of us who need/want this stuff before he hauls everything out for crushing.

and I agree that the Cadillac needs to be saved. That, a four-door Valiant and a Duster are about the only cars I can imagine ever coming back to life again.
