Technical Stromberg Alcohol carb with SP top question

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Nosetime, Apr 9, 2018.

  1. Hey guys. I have a few questions, but first an apology. I have not really shared what i'm up to, but have enjoyed some of the incredible knowledge and willingness to help on these boards. I have been working on and collecting parts for a Model A roadster this last year. New to this, but have other experience with cars, boats and bikes. I am not that guy who can do a great build thread..how do those guys do it? I never seem to take pics and when I do they suck! But, I will post something soon. Anyway, bought a few Strombergs to rebuild and one has been converted to alcohol with a SP top. I know this is something of value and I will keep it if it might work out for my banger engine. I have never seen this on a street car, but it seems it just eliminated the choke for racing? Should I keep the top on a rebuilt 97? I would really like something you don't see everyday. What would you do with this carb? I am still funding a lot of other parts for my build, so I ask the question.

Those tops do look kind of cool and not too many are seen on the street. Its been my experience that the bangers do prefer some manifold heat. If you are using a Yapp style Scalded Dog manifold that gets some heat from the original exhaust manifold, the lack of choke may work out fine for you, especially since you are in the land of "endless summer". If you are running a non original exhaust manifold, it may take a while for all to warm up on chilly days/nights.
Give it a try on a good non alcohol 97, you can always put a original top on.

    Peace, Phred

  3. Thanks Phred. Thats what i'm thinking. It's tempting to sell it- the only ones I found for sale were pretty pricey, but think I will hang on to it for a while.
