String wrapping a steering wheel

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by ricknroll, Mar 31, 2011.

  1. I wrapped a wheel for my Chevy with square leather with the intention of imitating the look of an Estwing hammer handle. I coated it with several coats of polyurethane. I changed steering boxes though so it will have to wait for another project.

The E-brake handle in my car broke, so I wrapped it with long leather shoelaces to hold it together [I epoxied it first]. I found a color that matches the leather on the steering wheel.
    Came out ok

  6. This is an awesome idea, IMHO. I'm going to give it a try.

Or, Macnamara's Lace as we called it while "serving" rails, stancions, wheels, etc. in the Navy.

Is it string or is it twine?

    Coxcombs, Turkmens' knots, Monkey's Fists....

Holy cow, there's a whole 'nother language going on here!

Heres mine on the sprint car i'm just finishing, Ground all the finger ripples from the bottom side. Its kind of tricky ,you need two people. we coated the section your'e doing with Elmer's Glue. Wrapped a section at a time, tucking the ends in . After finishing, & the Elmers glue sets. We brushed two coats of old time shellac over the twine, soaking it real good. Gives you kind of a rough feel when grabbing the wheel

They started doing this on race cars because you can't get a grip on a sweaty oily hard rubber or wood steering wheel.

They used to say "Oil comes out of everything but the tire valves and gets into everything including your hair".

  15. It's called "small stuff" and is usually a heavy cotton twine rather than anything containing nylon. An old Bosun I used to work with made his girl friend a mini skirt using small stuff. It looked like lace when he finished and she was very popular with all guys when wearing it.

I haven't heard the term "serving" in quite a few years. That kind of work has all but gone away with younger sailors.

I have a book that my son's bought me that was written in 19th century for young officers that talks about yards, sheets, spars and a multitude of other odd references. It has every type of knot or lashing you could ever find a use for.

I've read an article on this years ago and it mentioned to soak the material in water for a good while first. Same as can be done with exhaust wrap apparently. Tightens as it dries out.

Anyone shed any light on that?

  17. The proper term is coxcombing. Has been used by mariners for centuries on railings, banisters, etc. IIRC, each part of the ship would be tied differently so sailors could tell by feel where on the ship they were.

Here is an example of a simple one strand coxcomb on a model T accessory wheel, I used waxed linen thread.

    And my personal favorite, the 5-row woggle knot;

I'm using a model T steering wheel and the leather on there is okay, but i might just try some of this wrapping. Looks cool!

  22. That's some cool stuff........ need more input!

  23. Do you have any close ups of your wheel? Your interior is amazing, btw.

  26. On old stock cars, I've seen old fan belts wrapped around the steering wheel then over-wrapped with black friction tape. Definitely gave a better grip, especially on cars with no power steering.

I have plenty but this probably isn't the place. The cloth on my wheel is starting to show its age. Must be nearly time for some coxcombing.

I'll just sneak in this little one. One of my faves. Totally off topic
