The greatest inline-eights of all time! Supercharged: N-A.... http://photos.webridestv.com/datast...f72/Mercedes_Benz_300_SLR_115414_20080806.jpg
There's a Packard straight 8 on that evil auction site right now. Seller says it might be a 356 but he doesn't know enough about them. Auction #320492162880. I don't know the guy, just trying to be helpful since Hot Rod Packard said he was looking for one.
Hot Rod Packard, I seen your car up in SLC at some show I was driving by. I was in a hurry so I just took this cell phone pic. I love this thing.
Lots of eye candy in this thread. Not surprisingly, there seems to be a real bias toward the Buick engines. I’ve always liked the look of the Pontiac, but I understand that’s the worst of the bunch. Probably because it was the cheapest, eh? -Dave
Here is one of the two C.R. Greuter Excelsior engines which were the prototypes for the Straight 8 Stutz of the 1920s. This engine with a supercharger powered the Glenn Schultz Pikes Peak car early in it's career. http://home.townisp.com/~alsancle/PikesPeakStutzEngine.htm
Here are some from this years speed week. I was trying to get a picture of the valve train in the second engine. They put the cover on before I could. It was very impressive. This car is owned by Don Wheeler. It has our old cylinder head, fuel injection, and HEI distributor from one of our race engines. My brother did the metal work on the body too. "Wasn't anybody there except me and Little Skeet"
How did i miss this thread? I hope the Pontiac's aren't the worst! Well i got a 52 Pontiac chieftain deluxe with the straight 8 in it. Got a dumb idea to throw a sbc in it. But i saw the light actually my wifed beat me silly since its her car! Here are some pics. Before And after Just picked up another motor from a member on here so the rebuild will begin. Will post pics when she is done.
This thread makes me realize how grubby mine looks ... but at least I've got the pretty ignition wires now
Here's the '46 block in my '41 Pontiac coupe. Bored .125 to fit '54 268 ci.aluminum pistons. Holley-Weber carbs, .080 mill, 6 qt pan, full flow oil filter, Crane cam, HEI. Muncie 4 speed
Dave! Nothing wrong with Pontiacs 8's, very dependable and had forged steel rods and cranks! just smaller than the others. Pontiacs biggest was 268ci in '54 Some Packards and others were 350ci. Buicks have always been popular because they are OHV and breath better,= more power, and they respond to mods better.
Flatheads can still make respectable power and you will never bend a pushrod or hit a piston with a valve.
OK! I'll play. The first one I saw at Pebble Beach but now I don't recall the car. Anyone? This one belongs to a customer of mine, I've built two later Packard Eights for him, this is not my work sorry to say. This is one I built for him. Not quite so pretty.
Mctim64, I belive the car you saw at Pebble Beach was a Bugatti. Based on the arrangement of the spark plugs, the graceful pipe on top that appears to be to small for coolant, and the ribs on what is presumably the exhaust manifold. See 1939 Bugatti T57 Note that the finish and shape of the cam covers is very different. The ribs on the manifold appear to be of a different design. Also, the cam drive mechanism is next to the radiator, as apposed to the firewall side in the link I provided.
