I'm trying to find a good way to stop the air (hot and cold) and the smells from the engine compartment from coming inside. I'm talking about leaks from around hoses and wires with grommets, the air still comes in. Anybody have a any good ideas?

  3. Test fitting the "factory" firewall seals before final assembly. I didn't do that and I have the same problem. All the duct tape and caulk I have used has helped.

As seen on TV.. spray foam.
I would get some caulking and get busy sealing things up.

There's this stuff called....."monkey shit". NOT the trade name, just a nick name. It's like a putty (that kinda looks like monkey shit) that you form into shape and press into the hole or gape that you want filled. Contractors use it.

Use the a/c stuff that comes in strips. It has around for years mechanics call it dumb-dumb. You form it around your hoses and wires. The factory even uses it on A/C hoses.

I second this for helping loose grommets to fit and seal. 3M makes the stuff I use. I think it's called strip caulk. A box will last you a long time and you will find more and more stuff to use it for.

The dumb dumb I use is 3M strip calk, works great and easy to apply. What you don't use seems to last for years if you leave it in the box.

  20. 3m 8578 has changed its formula. It's sticky now and does not work as easy as before. If the sealer is hidden try the rope chalk from the hardware store. It has the consistinsey of the old 3m. We used s the black seal in the factory made by mortel. It lasted for years. I have a small amount left now. Have to store it in plastic wrap.

The fact that you are so intimately familiar with monkey shit that you can recognize it from a photograph is somewhat disturbing.

It is actually called Thum-Gum and can be bought in most home improvement stores or online.
That was the brand name of putty that we used in the manufacture of refrigerated semi trailers to seal up the sections in the walls, floors and roofs before foaming, anyway

  26. that stuff works good. i also use it around body clips to seal panels. it also will hold a nut/bolt into a socket for those hard to reach areas.

Monkey Sh*t. I don't know the color of it but it makes me wonder if this is a case of man do what monkey do. An action that monkey's do/did with they're poo to seal up holes up. What a monkey would seal up, that's another question.

I've got it in a roll, its Butyl tape, its usually used in windshields between the rubber and body to complete a seal, NAPA carries it it does come in several sizes, my old parts guy called it dum dum also.
Looks just like the factory stuff around wires and hoses.
