well guys, I managed to add another SW panel to my collection last weekend. I picked up a decent ensign panel at the Big E autoparts swap meet. I now have the hollywood, navigator and the ensign. just missing the largest and smallest of the series. Anyone have a source for someone who's cutting the engine turned inserts?? my navigator had a very hard warn engine turned insert that is now painted black, my hollywood and ensign panels must have both been crinkle finish as they are now stripped clean.
Bought this panel a few weeks ago, its filled with large logo or "big block" curved glass gauges (except the lower right water temp) and the tachs are flat glass.
going by the style it looks like it could be 55-57 vintage on the gauges, looks like curved glass. good score!
doose32, love the display panel, Ive been thinking about making a display panel for the panels Heres an updated pic of my gauge obsession collection!
Not a Stewart Warner but it has the look, I made it for my 35 Ford Pickup.............I'll run some S.W. guages in it.......
More of the collection. Not enough room ,alot in the garage. Some was sold. No 60's and newer. View attachment ebay 10-17 065.JPG
OK...I've got a question about the S&W gauges themselves... Are (for example) ALL the S&W water temp gauges the same, or the fuel gauges, or oil pressure.....etc??? I ask because I'd love to line the dash in my project truck with S&W gauges, and a good friend has several parts Peterbilts that are LOADED with S&W gauges. (sorry about the pun!) Plus......they'd be darn near FREE!!!! So...as a dumb-ass noob in this department........would the gauges from the semis work in my hot-rod???? Are they interchangable like this?? Thanx for any help!
Scored a tach drive dist for the P-38 dirt car today, thought I would get out the NOS tach and get it ready for the install. Just sharing what I used to seal up the cracking brass case. In no way is it a advertisement. Delete it if necessary. I used friction tape to insulate and seal the glass, cutting it down the middle, then folding it over the edge of the glass. I left the original cork and felt gasket. The tach glass was rattling. You can use 1 or 2 layers as needed. The side of the can was cracking as normal so to seal it and to help prevent it from getting any worse I used rescue tape. It bonds together like rubber when stretched. Some prettey good stuff they sell at the Dallas Autorama car show. JD i
Collected a couple more panels, switched a few around, and filled a few with some other gauges ive had around.
Yep, basically all the same gauges, other than they have to have the correct sending units matched to the guages.
There are 2 temp guages in a Peterbilt in the 50's that were off to the side of the dash panel, they were for the rear end temps, those for some odd reason were 6 volt not 12, the rest in the dash were 12
Just found out today that my insert in my new project is NOT home made but actually a Stweart Warner "Special" 8 in a row dash insert.. Cool.......
Need a dash for that instrument panel? this particular dash is for a 32 roadster.Bolts right in. my weekly metal work blog www.themetalsurgeon.com
... If it was made by AC why would they have used S/W Gauges; I have 2 of those inline 5 panels and they both have a different variation of S/W's
The AC panels (original post now has the pic missing and a red X showing) did have AC gauges in them. Same size as SW's, so they were commonly switched.
