    Ok here is a question.

    I have a 49 ford f1 with a monster of a steering wheel.

    Options

1...get a replacement used or oe style
    2...get a new smaller wheel
    3...fix the cracks in mine....

Is it possible to fix a steering wheel?

What are your thoughts...I did think about a smaller wheel..but with no PS maybe that isn't a good idea.

  2. Yes- there are a few threads about this if you do a search, but the basic idea is to Vee out the cracks with a file or dremel and fill them with PC7, JB Weld, or the like. Then sand, prime, and paint.

There is also an article on decreasing the diameter of your stock wheel in (I think) Classic Trucks a few months back. It's a well-written article and the writer shares some good ideas on how to do it!

Yes, it's possible to fix a steering wheel. V-notch the cracks, and fill with 2-part epoxy resin. Sand it to shape, paint and re-install.

  4. i cut mine down to 15.5 in. made a jig to downsize it in, rewelded it, repaired all cracks and painted it single stage black. i have 2 more to do for diff. people. pm me if interested and i will give you a quote. they are made out of bakelite, and i use a material that will bond and fill and feather when sanded.

I just finished repairing some cracks and chunks missing out of the steering wheel in my '65 Fury, turned out great, wasn't sure when I started, looks great.
