I have a 53 Dodge pickup with a Chevy truck column, the column is from a 79 Chevy truck, I want to put a flat wheel from an early 50's Chevy car, how far back will a steering wheel fit on my 79 Chevy column? Thanks

Maybe I was not clear, I mean will steering wheels from the 50's fit the splines on my 79 Chevy column. I want to make sure before I buy one.

Yes a 50's Chevy wheel will fit a 79 column

  7. Splines are the same. Horn contact may be an issue. Wheel to column area diameter may be smaller on the older wheel - don't lose the plastic top cover under the late model wheel.

Thanks for all the replies, I had a 63 Chevy wheel on my old column a mid 70's Chevy truck, just curious about the 50's steering wheel, thanks again

  9. GM columns have a small shaft and a large shaft; small shaft they used the same size and splines from the '30s to the '90s and perhaps even later. You can swap just about any of those wheels back and forth, the only consideration is contact for the horn circuit as some use a wire and some with the newer spring and plastic piece the position changes (I'd drill the lock plate if I was doing another).

The large shaft was used in Buick, Caddy, Olds cars in the 40s and 50s anyhow. '58 Buick is one example.
