My buddy and I reversed a corvair box for his '27T, hooked it all up and now it steers backwards, the pitman arm is pointing down, we cant move it to point up or else it will hit the headers. Did we put something together backwards inside the box? How do we fix this??

If you mounted it like this, it should steer the right way when reversed.

the whole reason for reversing it is get it to swing exactly as you describe

Why did you think you had to reverse it? Did you actually hold it up to the car and try it before doing the reverse? Or did you just read about it in a magazine?

Don't feel bad, the first model A I built did the same thing. Wasn't hard to figure out, and no one saw it til it was fixed. About 1963.

This is FUNNY! Sorry. I know it isn't to you right now.

Have to admit a story on myself though...

Two years ago, I replaced the rack and pinion steering in my small ski boat and we took off for a 4 hour drive to Lake Michigan. After waiting in line and putting it in the lake, I quickly realized the rack was in upside down and the steering was BACKWARDS. I could not BELIEVE that I had done that!

I started to pull back in to the boat dock and my brother looks me in the eye and says, "Dude, we are on the water..."

So, after pondering that comment for a moment, I never looked back. I put my hand at the BOTTOM of the steering wheel and just remembered right is right and left is left for the rest of the day. We had a GREAT time!!!

    Good luck with your situation!

You need a reversed Corvair steering box when it is mounted above the frame rail, not below it.

  11. HUH? How does the height that you mount the box make any difference? What matters is the direction of mounting and the way the Pitman arm is pointing.

Yeah, and you'd be the only ones that know how to drive it. Consider it an anti-theft devise.

I did the same thing in the 80s. Put my wife in it to drive it around to the camp site. Still haven't heard the last of it yet.

I'm sorry, I can't stop laughing from chaos10meter's comment "You'll get used to it".

I'm trying to picture this guy and his buddy driving the car, with sweat rolling down their faces, "We just have to get use to this!"

This is an easy fix...flip the steering wheel over, that'll take care of the problem.

I'll be the first to admit that I am sure it is some (hopefully!) simple error we made, I have no problem at all fessing up when I f%$* up...
I'll have to take a look after work tonight and see what is up, he is trying to relay to me what is happening and another buddy mounted the box so I will get a clearer picture of what is up and check back in...I am just hoping that this would be one of those situations where youve looked at a problem so long you are overlooking the obvious, then a fresh set of eyes has a look and spots the problem instantly - let you know what I find out...

Right along the same lines. Rebuilt the tranny on my Harley back around 1995ish..

Got it out of the basement for the first ride and couldn't find neutral! After scratching my head for about 20 mins, I tried it backwards, and there it was.

So, instead of 1 up/3 down, it was 1 down/3 up..

Left it like that for about 7 years until I took the tranny back out again.

Not too hard to get used to. :O The nice thing is, no one wanted to ride my bike.

    Hum,
    Every Harley I've had since 69 is 1 down/3 or 4 up.
