i have a steering column out of a 2000 astro van that is installed in a '36 ford truck we are building. We need to know how to unlock the column since the brake connection is no longer an option. There must be someway to override that feature. Thanks for any help!!!
I am not familiar with this particular collumn, but I've removed the steering lock on a Camaro race car I built [ steering locks were banned on purpose built road racers ] If you can removed the whole lock assembly from the column [ 2 bolts need tapping around patiently with a center punch ] There should be a square / rectangle hole in the column underneath the lock / barrel assembly When you lock the ignition, a spring loaded latch goes thru this hole and locks the column [ in a certain steering postion ] Now the high tech bit: Get a thin piece of "Coke can" aluminum and wrap it around the column to cover the hole, and re-install the lock assembly over it [ use allen head cap screws ]
REMOVE THE WHOLE column, nothing turns a purest off more then seeing one of those columns in a nice car. nothing wrong with up dating for safety but find something else, please. not trying to be mean or anything , just trying to save you some heart ache later, and if you think I'm wrong then i think you might be better suited on a different streetrod board. just my opionion which doesn't count for much, and again not trying to be mean.
you are soooo right on...i have the old style in my other two '40's however...... This is what came with the truck and i am trying to make it work for my son until the fund$ improve.
