Projects Steelies or mag wheels? Both are popular but what do you prefer?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Apr 23, 2017.

  1. Just a observation but it seems to me that more cars & trucks are now running steelies. With me I'm bias and lazy, steelies are easier to clean! :D HRP

I have had steelies on my old beater for 20 years.

watch out, somebody might "steel" your idea

  3. If I'm honest,i would say that i prefer steelies. However,in certain instances mag wheels work well.

  5. Greatly depends on the feel of the car.
Steelies work great on most anything.
Polished up alloy wheels make a field car look excited.

Depends on the car/truck, wheel/tire combo and vehicle theme. I can go both ways but not too thrilled of the mix of the two on the same vehicle as was apparently done back in the day due to cost.

Depends on the car. But, over all, if I could afford them, I'd have Cragar S/S wheels on everything I own.

I have only once been able to keep a promise that I made with myself on leaving the OEM steel wheels that a vehicle came with, that's my 2000 Silverado, alloys on everything else.

  10. I remember my friend Deuce Roadster always liked red wheels and they looked great on his roadster but for some reason he didn't like them on his 3 window coupe and tried a lighter color and although he did like the look better he finally decided to go with mags. HRP

Wheels are the one thing that can make a car or truck look entirely different. I've never been a big fan of steel wheels and/or hubcaps/ wheel covers, I guess because I was always losing the caps/wheel covers. I like my wheels to be shiny, polished aluminum or chrome plated, 5 spokes or 5 slots. That said, my car currently has a set of bullet hole wheels, only because they were on the car I traded for it and kept them and the nearly new tires. I want a set of Torq Thrusts, new style or old, or a set of 5 slot aluminum wheels for it later on, just got to rock with what I have for now.

Oh, and I don't care for red wheels and for sure don't want any solid black ones. Black is OK if it has chrome caps and rings that cover most of the color up. These cars nowadays with solid black wheels look awful to me, the wheel should be a point of attention, not blend in with the tires.....

  19. There is a certain simplicity about steelies and I have to admit a lot of cars wear the aftermarket wheels well.

And I am noticing the Chrome wheels are making a come back.HRP

Steelies for the Wheelies all the way. I was partial to "chrome slots' and keystone mags in my yute...

  25. LOL I was going to say that I have a tendency to mix n match. I like both and a lot depends on the car I suppose.

I am currently planning Ansens on the front of my project and Steelies on the rear like Jim here, but that could change. A lot depends on what I have in my pile when the time comes.

I guess looking at the cars I've had it's probably sort of obvious... :D

Might have had something to do with my budget though.

  28. Seems to me the first thing we did back in the day was pull the steelies off and put "Cragars" on her. I guess it depends on the application. I like them both, but you see what I drive. ;)

  29. Like most on here, I believe it depends on the specific style of the car. I've mostly been partial to mags, either aluminum or magnesium (hate the composite ones with aluminum centers and steel rims - seem like junk to me), particularly Halibrands - I've owned well over 1000 vintage mag and aluminum wheels. Having said that, some steel wheels really get my blood flowing - I have a pair of 6 lug high clearance (milk truck) wheels that I will use someday - one is NOS and one is very nice used condition. I want to rehoop them to 18" when I can find appropriate outer rims that will work (the centers have a very large 16 1/4" diameter).
