Technical starter

    ok ive got a 96 5.0 with a m5r2 manual trans and a new starter , it just hits on the flywheel doesnt turn it over , 3rd starter that did this ???????

    I know nothing about ford starters, but if chevy maybe shim it, 1 or 2 brake pedals aircoup

  8. If it came out of a red car it's a different starter than a blue car. If it was finished after May 31st a different starter than before.

    Even though Henry used the assembly line, it seems that Ford never made any two parts the same.

    Small block Fords have 2 different starters, one for automatic transmissions and the other for manual. The trick is that all 157 tooth flywheels use automatic transmission starters regardless of the transmission installed. Yeah, don't ask.

    Fords don't use shims, except there is a spacer shim available if your crankshaft thrust bearing is worn out enough to relocate your flywheel. If you need one of those, you have bigger problems.

    There is also another way to screw up a Ford build, and that is to install a 157 tooth flywheel in a 164 tooth bellhousing.

    discovered i was sold a automatic starter dammit maybe ill put the new guts in the old case ?
     
  12. Won't work; the armature shafts are different lengths, as are the starter snouts.
