starter problems on a sbc 350???

Anyone know the max allowed limit of play in a. Flywheel ??
I just put a dial indicator on the flywheel , turned it. And found one spot that's off ny 15 thousands .015

 

Also experienced new mini starter problems. 168 tooth staggered. Shimmed up to 60 thou with the same results. Bought a Powermaster and found that the problem was not up and down shimming but in and out. Powermaster supplied a shim that moved the starter towards the front of the car. Voila, no problems. Have since fought out that I thin it was Speedway that sells shims for the flywheel to achieve the same result.

Mounted the starter and noticed there's a lip on the oil pan that's gettin bent from the starter does anyone know if this might be a problem might be causing the starter to shift on me ??

 

No one has said anything about the metric stater bolts. If you have them they will screw in and tighten but come loose and will damage your block.

I'm having starter problems too. Mine is I cant get the starter close enought. It said to have an 1/8" gap between the flywheel and armature and its still too much. Ican't get it any closer...

 

Are these aluminum nose cone starters? If they are, swap to a cast iron nose cone. After all the problems you've had, the flywheel/flex plate gear has got to be buggered up, replace it. Be sure and check the starter mount pad on the block, they frequently break the outer bolt hole boss on SBC/BBC engines. One other thing comes to mind, this was a problem I ran into years ago with my sisters 68 Camaro; has the engine lost it thrust bearing? And like everyone else has said, new STARTER bolts and support bracket. Butch/56sedandelivery.

Once the teeth on the flywheel even remotely start to look bad you have to replace the flywheel and the starter.You will forever chase this problem if you don't.If you have a flywheel wrench try turning the flywheel one revolution and you'll probably find some teeth knocked off or severely damaged.Check the bolt holes in the block and see if there cracked or oblonged,if they are sorry but you'll be putting a block in it.New knurled starter bolts are a must,and if your using a gear reduction starter make sure the screws that hold the motor to the end plate are tight.Haven't seen any gear reduction starters needing shimmed usually if shims are needed it's the older style starters.Check the timing more isn't always better.Good luck.

 

Ok guys ,I've had this same problem with my 81 corvette, I have a 69 chev 350 block but I'm using a mini starter which was always walking and bending my bolts. Solution) 4 1/2 x 3/8 starter bolts for a 96 chevy s10 with the 4.3 v6 ,problem solved fellas.
