Start over and get a Chevy, since it's what the cool kids had! ;)

Are you running a Wayne motor in that, @Stovebolt
    ?

I can't see your avatar since I'm on the app.

    Got a picture to spare?

And Marty, I loved the wood chopper video!

I am a long way off woth my head.

Its a raw casting, although I have original accessories (Valve cover and side plate) to go with it. Got N.O.S. rockers, but need a bunch of other parts and even worse, a bunch of funds to get it done.

    Here's a picture of my avatar. Gene ran Bonneville in 1949 ( A rpu with a 12 port) 1950 ( 32 roadster with the 12 port) and 1951 ( track nosed 27 T roadster with the 12 port)

Today, I opened the radiator box that Pat brought up, what a great piece of workmanship. I am not going to mount it until I have the track nose in place. Meanwhile I ordered some 2-1/4" J-Bends for the exhaust, and am currently searching for a tapered cone with the correct dimensions. The diameter of the side pipe will be 3-1/2" and will need some shaping to match the side of the body. IMG_0719.JPG IMG_0720.JPG IMG_0721.JPG IMG_0723.JPG IMG_0722.JPG

Do you know who made the radiator?

A friend is building a repop Edmunds sprinter and is having difficulty finding a brass radiator for it and doesn't want to go with aluminum.

    Thanks.

Pat had a shop in LA build it. I am sure he will fill in the details.

OK, as I showed on pg. 32 of this thread, I got the radiator from Rick's Radiator in Azusa, CA. Radiator shops are scarce today, and good ones that will do custom work are really rare. Lowrider bomb-building wizard Joe Espstein told me about Rick's. When I showed Rick photos of the Spalding car, he immediately I.D.ed the radiator as a '40 Chevy, cut down (shortened) somewhat. He also said he worked for U.S. Radiator for several years, and could get them to make me a '40 Chev radiator with a core of the dimensions we needed. I also ordered it with no side braces/mounts so Marty can make those to fit our frame at the right height. Yes, it's a nice piece. I'm pretty sure Rick said he could ship radiators. Call and see.

Tank and the upper and lower hose fittings sure look like the one in my 40 Chev. JD

Don from U.S. Rad turned me onto Rick a few years back, he redid the Radiator in the 34 Roadster, the guys a genius when it comes to heat dissipation. His worker even spent years with Tom Phipps-Gennie Shifter building all of the West Covina versions.
Glad that “Montebello Joe” turned ya on to those Katz.

Thank you for the information about the radiator. I missed the mention a few pages back.

I'll mention this to my friend.

I ordered and received two 2-1/4" J-bends for the exhaust system, and was having a problem coming up with a tapered cone with the correct dimensions, 2-1/4" on one end and 3-1/2" on the other end, around 20" long, so, I decided to make one. Starting with some 18 ga CR steel, and using PI times diameter, I sheared the material to a taper, then curled both edges in the brake. Next , using a slip roll, I formed the cone as close as I could, giving the fact my rolls are 2" in diameter. I was unable to get the small end formed tight, so I used some hose clamps to close the gap, so I could tack weld the seam. Using a round bar on the inside, I hammered the seam into shape. It took a little squeezing and hammering with a plastic hammer to finalize the shape, but it will work out fine. I started the mock up for the pipe, deciding where to trim the bend for the correct angle down the side of the car. The pipe on the original, was only about 3/4" off the side of the body, and flat with the frame rail. IMG_0737.JPG IMG_0739.JPG IMG_0742.JPG IMG_0743.JPG IMG_0745.JPG

That's about how I did mine on my champ car, using everything I could find that would squeeze the final cone progressively down to its desired dimensions - chain vice grips, header flange, pipe flange, rod end, chain vice. sr021.jpg

Yep, that's what we call hot rodding. We don't buy off the shelf. We make our own.
    Beatiful work, as usual.

I was unhappy with the thickness of the flanges I made, so I had a pair laser cut out of 3/8" material. Also my math when making the tapered cone was correct, I failed to remember that u-bends always seem to measure smaller in the bend area, like .025 smaller. The connection at the cone was not optimal, but I am lucky to have friends. An old friend, Dennis Murray, builds superbike exhaust systems and had a cone that necked down to 2", and I was able to trim it to the right diameter. When making the "shoe" connection on the rear pipe, I use a combination of band saw, tin snips, and belt sander. Then, with a little shaping on the horn of the anvil, the fit is pretty close. Notice the gap at between the 3/4" spacer and the cone, on the final fit the space between the body and pipe will be 3/4". This has got to be the best build for my taste on this site! Great workmanship an just enough respect for the past. Only thing is, that dash.... Now I have to tear mine apart to steal your idea. Oh well, the price of this addiction we share.

Great build. can't wait to see it painted!

Koz, I can't take credit for that dash, just trying my best to duplicate the original. Thanks for your interest, good luck with your project.

Marty, great eye. That is a very visually attractive exhaust system. It takes patience to make things look right. Well done!

Making a template for the shape of the tailpipe, I started with some round aluminum tig welding rod, but decided to form an aluminum angle. It will hold it's shape better, and more consistent for the company that is going to roll the 3-1/2" pipe. The vertical flange will serve as the center line of the pipe. Well, I went to two places today, thinking they could roll form the tailpipe. One couldn't do it, and the other was 8 weeks out ! I have one more to investigate tomorrow, let's see how it goes. The pipe is such a distinctive feature on this car, I don't want to screw it up. Also, I love the head on shot, showing how the side nerf bar runs parallel to the pipe. What Marty! You don't have a tube roller for 3 1/2" tubing? How do you manage?
