Technical Sombrero medallion ideas

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by voodookustoms, Jul 1, 2016.

  1. Hey guys, I'm trying to find something that will look good as a center medallion for my sombreros I just got. This is what I am thinking. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1467406622.352266.jpg
    Or something like this
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1467406673.038705.jpg
I ordered two ford horn ring medallions but they are too small and will need something to fill in the gap.

The medallion is 2" in diameter. The outer holes that need to be covered are 3 1/4" apart so I'll need something at least 3 1/4" in diameter.
I looked at 49 ford horn buttons and they are 4" in diameter. Might work but they are quite a bit bigger than I was hoping for.
Anyone have any ideas besides bullets? I don't like how bullets look on these caps.
    Thanks.

Convex mirrors like truckers use on the bottom of west coast mirrors. Then shoot candy toner over it.

  5. If you're looking for something from the Ford line, check to see how big the center emblems are for the '62-63 T-bird wires. Some of the late '60 though '80s center emblems may work also (look for cast wheel center caps in particular). Some late 50s/early 60s Mercury horn buttons are about that size, those could work.

Although if you want to use the emblems you already have, finding a pair of beat-up '55-56 Ford wheel covers shouldn't be too hard (or expensive) and cut the centers out of them.

How about some pointy round tail light lens. 54 Buick or 56 Chev?

That's a good idea, grab a couple old 55-56 Ford caps that are all beat up around the outer edges and just cut the center out to the 3 1/4" diameter you need, it'll be a stainless ring that will hold the plastic centers perfectly.

  9. I think I like this idea the best so far.
I actually just purchased two plain chrome horn buttons online. They should be here tomorrow. Im going to try to cut the centers out to fit the medallions. If it doesn't end up working out good or if it looks like shit, ill try the hubcap route.

I took the Beatle's Abby Road CD cover and laminated it and put it behind some clear plastic. Kids never miss it and it has created a lot of conversations. Sorry, I don't have a picture.

  12. Thanks for the idea guys. They turned out great I think. I got the 55 caps for $20! Just took a little cutting, grinding and polishing and they look like they came from the factory. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1468962412.135240.jpg

  16. I always wondered what you could do, short of using bullets, to dress up sombreros when the medallions have gone away.

That turned out fantastic, as clean as if the factory did it.

  18. How did you fasten them onto the cap?

  19. The ford centers were JB welded to the caddi ribbed section and that piece was attached to the hubcap with 3m extra strength double sided tape.

On my 48 olds 98, I used 49 cad wheels and caps. I cut the center emblem out of the olds dog dish caps in a square pattern with a disc cutter and trimmed them round with scissors to the cad emblem size and epoxied them to extra cad center emblems which attach with 4 tabs to the sombrero like stock, using the stock cad ribbed outer emblem embellisher ring of course.
