You're in my prayers, and the tales of courage from many who've already replied are outstanding... keep the faith.

I've checked in on this thread countless times over the past few months. Keep a positive attitude, it helps more than you know.

My dad was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma in April. I'm at his bedside now, counting the hours and remembering all of the great hot rodding we've done together. We did EVERYTHING the doctors suggested (chemo, diet, chelation, etc.) but this is one battle he hasn't been able to win.

Cherish your loved ones fellas. You never know what's going to happen. Make peace with family, no matter who's at fault. I have no regrets with my dad, except that he always wanted to go fishing in Alaska and we never did. I wish I could have taken him.

I lost Dad to Pancreatic cancer in November, 2006. IT was pretty advanced when it was found, and he didn't have any desire to stick around any longer. He had hurt for a long time, and had a pretty excting life, so it was over 2 weeks after we found out.

My uncle just passed yesterday of cancer....I know what I'll be doing this weekend :(

Your HAMB peeps are always here! Already offered a prayer for you, dude.

Thank you brother, we both miss hanging out with you.

  7. Keep the faith. My dad is 69 and has had prostate cancer for a few years, he's doing some sort of non-surgical approach. If my prostate was bad I'd have them cut it though I hear it might lead to ED. I'd rather be alive for 40 years with ED than live for 6 years.

My younger sister turned 40 and found out she had stage II breast cancer. She's kicked it but it was scary for all of us.

Best wishes. If you are heavy and a big meat eater, especially red meat, you need to work on that... Mostly green vegetables and cut the beef down to nothing...

You're right on the money John. Garlic and asparagus are also awesome cancer fighters. Shit, someone stop me before I turn this into the Julia Child's Message Board.

You've heard it all. Keep working on that truck. I have been in the battle since August 2005. Five tumors. Three radical neck dissections. 8 months of herbal treatment on last one. New one two months ago and treating it naturally as I write this. Best therapy in the world is turning wrenches. Heck I got to Bonneville in this hot rod while doing the battle. Named it for the battle and even but the names of my cancer buddies I have lost on the front. Print one of these pictures and hang it on your shop wall. Use it to inspire you to just keep doing the things you love the most.

Hi 48flthdf1, I have been following your thread with interest. I was diagnosed about the same time as you (early August) My biopsy showed my prostrate C was very aggressive so they booked me in for an urgent operation.
Had the op September 22 which was just as well, mine wasn't far away from leaving the prostrate.
Coping with the usual after effects but am back in the shed and back jogging.
Doing the full diet changes that many of the guys on here have suggested.
My decision was based on info from my GP and Specialist.
I think as some people have said it's a major decision dependent on your own situation, taken with info from professional people you have begun to trust.
I'm looking forward to getting back to racing my vintage motorcycles, riding my mountainbikes, building my next car project but most of all spending many years sharing the love of my wife and boys.
I was lucky I just made a random decision to have a check up after about 4 years, why I still don't know.
Best of luck man, I'll keep following your thread and thanks to the great bunch of guys on the HAMB.
Thinking of you 48flthdf1, cheers shedrat29

At least surgery IS an option. Going under the knife is never a good thing, but being told it's in-op and there's nothing they can do is worse. That's what the doc's told my dad about 45 days ago. We buried him last Friday.

Keep your chin up man. The options may have changed, but the doctors are still optimistic! We're praying for your quick, FULL recovery!

48flthdf1, I am friendly with 3 brothers out of a family of 6 brothers ranging in age from 48-60.In the last 4 years all six,yes all of them, needed surgery for prostate cancer. Not the usual slowing growing stuff but an aggressive type .They are all free of Prostate cancer now and all of them had the usual Johnson problems from the surgical procedure. In time they all learned to overcome the problems,so will you...Good luck!

  17. 48flthhd1,
I don't know what surgical procedure you will be undergoing but look into robotic surgery (the Da Vinci robot). That was my choice and I have not regreted it, epecially comparing my experience with others who underwent conventional surgery. It's not as invasive and the recovery time is shorter.
I'm 5 years past and truthfuly sometimes forget what I went through.
Pm me if there is anything I could help with.
    Good Luck

I wish you Good luck, but it would not matter if your PSA went down with Herbal treatments or not, if the Transrectal biopsy showed cancer, in any of the cores, you wont reverse it with over the counter remedies. PSA is just an antigen indicator and can be elevated from a number of reasons. Your main concern should be your Gleason score. Your Urologist will present you will all your options. If you plan on living another 15 or more years, My recommendation is Robotic Prostatectomy, but find yourself a surgeon with plenty of the procedures under his belt. You wouldn't want a guy painting your car who has only shot color once or twice. If you have any concerns or questions, I'll try to help, just PM me.

  19. Don't get too down about the operation. My father had the same operation several years ago and he's been doing way better since the operation. Good luck and I hope your recovery is speedy so you can build that truck.

It was worth the try. I had surgery for 2a colon cancer a year and 1/2 ago and had the choice of chemo then or not. Chose not because of the surgeon's and pathology reports. Now am doing chemo cause it's in my liver found as the result fo ongoing CEA blood tests. Looking back it was probably there all along as the "unremarkable" things there on the CT. Hindsight is always 20/20. Oncologist says water over the dam we'll go forward.
    Best of luck to you!

    Scot,

If you have not discussed radiation treatment with a oncologist then you are doing
    yourself a disservice.

I had external beam radiation for 6 weeks and a couple of weeks later I had the "Hot Seeds" (they call me Atomic Pete now).

That was 10 years ago when I had a PSA of 25 and a Gleason score of 8. I was shittin' in my flat hat then, but am now totally cured!

Ask the doctor that wants to perform surgery on you if he's familiar with the Parton Tables. If he says he is, then ask him what's your best bet and make him discuss it with you. If he says no, then get a new doctor.

I am fortunate to have no complications like a number of my friends do who had surgery. Remember, 10% is one in ten or ten in one-hundred.

This is your main, even only, task now. Keep your eye on the ball, research and plan. Like all battles, winning is 90% planning.
Good luck and fight. Know you're going to beat this.

You will want a surgeon who is experienced with "nerve sparing" surgery. This will limit the amount of time before you are "Up" and running again:)
