My uncle Steven Barnett was in a club called the Devonshires Paramount. Anyone ever hear of them? I have his plaque but no info on the club.
we just located this treasure- this was cast in 1948, this was the first plate run by our club and this is the first time we have seen one (outside of magazines).
What is really cool is there is a picture of the trunk of the "Grapevine" in there too before Watson sold it.
My parents were in the "LANCERS" they named me after their club. I was born to be a car guy! I still have their plaque

Great nostalgia, thanks. The Squires charity show article was especially interesting to me, my late brother was a member- I have his old satin jacket with the Squires embroidered patch on the back, and two car plaques. A lot of the guys in that club got their cars spiffed up at the Barris Brothers place on Atlantic, including my brother's '47 Ford sedan. The whole area from Compton/Paramount thru the South Bay was a hot rod hotbed back in the day.

Guess it's traditional to miss identify vehicles in photos, look at the last pic. Great seeing this kind of post, brings back memories.
Wow...the first story woke me up! Reliability run with the Cam'n'Coilers, in San Jose! I went on that run, I was 15, think I rode with Chic Cannon, an original organizer of the NHRA Safety Safari...Chic moved his digs up North to Santa Clara in '56. "Noise by Cannon" was his trademark, (a little pot-bellied cannon going off) Chic was the Olds guru around San Jose for quite some time, ran a '29 drag roadster with a 402" olds, if I remember correctly...we did the run in his chopped red '32 shop pickup, with big flathead. Truck was featured in HRM, '55 or '56...
I was reading through this old thread to see if anyone ever posted about the Crash Helmet. I'd sure like to see if there are other editions out there. I also read this post by RRuss and it sounds like his truck may have been like my friend's. It had a 3 carb manifold, was lowered with a dropped axle that was installed by the Service Center. Also had side pipes and a white toneau cover on the bed. Put lots of miles on this on the weekends cruising all over So Cal. The worst thing about it was the seat. He took the frame out from underneat it so we would look cooler sitting with just our head showing but it wasn't the most comfortable thing to drive having to reach up for the stick shift and steering wheel and getting to the clutch pedal and brake. But it was a cool looking black stepside.
