Take a closer look at the casting number. Could it be 462624?

If so, they're probably from a '75-'86 350 or 400. In various configurations, they're reported to have come with 1.72, 1.94 and even 2.02 inch intake valves. I've never had a set of these, but I've heard that they are known for cracking problems. So, it would be a good idea to have them magnafluxed before spending any $$ on them. They're said to make good torque, but that's about it.

If you're building a cruiser, they're probably OK; but they're NOT performance heads.

In case they're 6s and I don't get back to this in time:

76-87 with 1.94/1.50 or 2.02/1.60 size valves with 76 cc chambers.

They're generally considered by folks more knowledgeable than I as crappy castings. I've never owned a set personally though.

3970010 - the block - as mentioned earlier, was used in nearly everything for a decade. lots of 'em around. 2 and 4 bolt. It's your standard run of the mill 350 block.

On the heads- the on paper stats look okay for mild performance - esp. if they're tge 2.02/1.6 version - but if you've got plans to rebuild this motor, I'd ditch the heads. You can get decent L98 aluminum heads for cheap (Same heads on the ZZ4). Or go real old school and a nice set of camel humps (like what I did). It's a chevy motor... there are infinite possiblilties.

  13. G'day,

The target masters were indeed assembled in Mexico. I don't believe they used the 010 casting 4 bolts though. They used the lightweight casting 4 bolt similar to the 78 and newer casting but were set up for dipstick on either side.

These engines were the original "crate" engine and left a lot of people wary of crate motors. They had a reputation as the ultra low performance engine. The one that we pulled from my brothers Chevy truck had not been opened before but we found one bank was standard and the other bank of pistons were .030. I wonder why it shook?

For your gurus (could not find on google). my sbc heads are 3986839X (motor is a '65 327 sbc from a car). I also see GM53 and J121 (maybe J127).
