Hey Old Timers, when did slot mags come along?I am trying to build my '60 into a mid to late '60s hotrod .I put on a set of old "ET" slots with lots of reversing and i love it.It looks good with the excessive rake.Is this correct for that era or not?I plan to use an after market "ThunderBolt" style teardrop scoop also.
Aluminum slots for the street appeared in the mid 60's. The scoop in '64 You're fine for the era. Mutt
'63 or '64 for slotted dish chrome steel wheels, Astro and M/T among others sold them. Roth used his own versions on Road Agent and the front of Mysterion. Cast slots were definitely around in '68, probably available in '67.
I agree man! I'm running them on my "not for the HAMB" truck in polished form and they look awesome. GM and Ford (possibly Chrysler too) jumped on the band wagon in the 70s with alum. 5 slots on several cars and trucks.
several people on the HAMB run slot mags on really fine rods. The guy across the street from me, the one with the Alcohol FED has been buying up slot mags for the past five years. He's sure they are going to be big soon. All I have is two 15"x10" wheels that need "unilug" washers and some M/T's that don't leak thru the sidewalls.
I was talking to a few guys at the Good Guys event this weekend and they too said 5 slots are going to be the next big thing. Glad I got mine before they go outta sight in price. Funny thing is, you can still find them all over in junk yards.
Thanks, thats what i wanted to hear guys.I also think slots are gunna be the next big thing.I bought a full set a while back from a little swapmeet that was not even a car swap meet. Two of them were 15 by 3.5 Fentons in real nice shape ,and the other two were 15 by 8. I sold them to my friend.I bought the whole set for $80.00 .I'm such a dumb ass!
if slots are the next big thing, then I gotta take them off of three of our rides! damn...they look nice, too bad they have to get popular again.
Slots did seem to be going up in price in Central California a little while before I left there. One swap I hit had fairly high prices for slots. Kinda funny in that they were dirt cheap the year prior. The 3.5 x 15 Slots - regardless of brand - are in fairly high demand and bring a good price. I've been looking for a pair for some time and all I found was one at the Long Beach swap meet about five years ago. It had a hundred dollar price tag on it and yeah, I shoulda bought it. And I'd still be looking for a mate. Close as I can get to a narrow slot is a 5.5 x 14. Got a couple of those, nicely polished on the front of my 32 and found one more locally for $10. although that price won't last long. Dr. J mentioned a pair of 10 x 15's. Hang on to them, they're getting hard to find as well. What really helps with the Uni-Lug mags that don't use the offset washer, but rely on the lugnut keeping them centered is to use Centerline's thick (3/16" I believe) mag lug washer. If you don't, the thin washers that come with most mag lugnuts cone in and you lose torque on the lugnut. The thick washers prevent that. You can do a lot of interesting things with slots. They look pretty good - with the right tire - popped on with a set of nice shiny lugnuts. An aftermarket center - best are the aluminum ones that go in from the back and don't screw into the wheel proper with metal screws look very good. I've made a couple of my own hubcap set-ups. The one pic, a solid piece of billet aluminum was whittled into a hubcap and the wheels drilled and tapped to match. (You can do this without drilling and tapping the wheel proper if you get a long hex closed top lugnut and do the drill and tap bit in the lugnut. More on this if you wish.) My favorite so far are the 32 Ford re-pro caps adapted to the slot mags on my 32. Slots come in a lot of sizes and widths. 13, 14, 15" wheel sizes in widths from 3.5" - if you're reallyl lucky - to 5.5", 6", 7", 8", 8.5", I think there's a 9" out there, 10" and 12". The 12's are really hard to find. There are 14" wides out there from what I hear, but I have yet to see any. Far as offset or backspacing goes, the 10" wides are usually 2 7/8" deep. The majority of the slots have 3" backspacing and there are quite a few with 4". Way out of town junkyards are some of the best places to search for mags. Another excellent place is an aluminum recycling place. These guys realize the mags are worth more than the per # price for aluminum and many times set them aside for individual sale. Bring cash, wave it at the guys....
Damn...I was going to ask whether 15 x 12 aluminum slots even existed and then read above that they're very rare. Anyone know what kind of price a pair might bring?
got slotted chrome steel (painted grey in the center) 6 lug with fat M/T 50's on my truck while I wait to rebuild and go 5 lug all around.
I've seen the 15X12 and 15X14 Ansen's go for $300.00 to $400.00 a pair before they started getting popular again.
I've got this pair of super skinnies. They measure 4.5" on the outside of the bead, so they're probably 3.5" or 4" wide. They match and have a perfect matching pair of Starfire Poly Sport 5.60 15" tires on them. I'll never use them for anything, maybe someone wants to trade me something for them? Got a pair of wide ones to go on the back, too.
I am looking for a pair of 15x10 or wider mags for my coupe. The bolt pattern is 5 on 4 1/2. Have fentons on the front but i would entertain just about any style for the rear to get this thing ready for the hamb drags. I have a set of 14x8's that are in the picture but they are to small for the slicks i need.
I don't know if they would work for what you want, but I have some 15X8 1/2 ET Unilugs that have the rims drilled for slicks. Let me know if your interested. Larry T
Thanks for the heads up Larry. I've sent you a pm on the subject but i'm covering all the bases by posting here also. Let me know what you want for the rims and send a pic if you've got one. Thanks, Sean.
What happen to the skinnies and the wides for the back? Are they sold? Please let me know whats up. Thanks, Sean.
Im glad I searched about this as I was about to start a thread on this. I too was questioning whether they would look right on my 57 f-100 when I get started on it. I picked four 15x7s, two 15x8 1/2s, and two 15x10s that fit the big ford (5x5 1/2) pattern. My dad has some old 15x3 1/2s that he will give me but will have to adapt. Still don't know if some old steelies that I have might make it on the truck but this helped clear some things.
