Looking closer at the 'leaving' photo, shows what racing at Bonneville was for a bunch of 'Dirty Neck Racers'. Extra intake and carbs, barrel of racing fuel, last minute thrash, and the extend a range fuel tank on the roadster pickup, and that was just after a quick overview. The trip to the salt would be at least three days from Riverside, on two lane roads and few towns between, I image Vegas was still a little train stop in the desert. I was lucky enough to meet Mr Gurney at the opening of Boys of Bonneville Movie, he was sitting behind us.
Looking at the picture with the 4 young men going to Bonneville was a great shot. Any history on the amazing trip from Riverside to Wendover, time needed, roads, paved or unpaved? Stop along the road and sleep? Bonneville or bust? According to Google it's 600 miles currently. I'm sure the young fellows had a lot of stories to tell of that journey. Great pictures, looks like 28-29 RPU was the tow car.
Thanks @Jive-Bomber the stories with the pics help archive the history that has passed us but still creates a desire to have been there or experience some of what the former generations had done. Great stuff.
Great Jive, Skips roadster even made the cover of Hot Rod. I read somewhere a Judge made skip sell the roadster, for illegal street racing, and excessive tickets.
Fantastic post. Thank you J-B. I did not know that Dan Gurney died last week. Here's his obit in the NYT: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/15/...er-and-builder-of-racecars-is-dead-at-86.html Coincidentally I just finished 'Return to Glory' about a month ago. Makes this all the more relevant. I've gone as fast as 126 MPH, in a car designed to go that fast. 130+ MPH in a ModelA... BALLS!!
Not completely off topic but @porknbeaner just picked up a car that apparently ran in 50/51 and we had just been talking about where to find photos of the salt thisenyears when’s this popped up! It’s a 47 ish Crosley on a lengthened model a chassis that was running a 390 cid flathead Cadillac. I think it was running two 40’ford hoods as one sort of streemliner hood but that May have been after 1950. Was wondering you’d anyone has links to some more photos from the flats that season? - great article by the way
