Since Hot August Nights is now in San Diego...has anyone's plans changed?

To be honest I think it's a bad move. I'm sure the promoters think they'll make more money since there's presumably more money down south, but the charm of the event was being able to walk from one huge Casino parking lot to the next. The Casino lights made it cool, the buffets made it cool, the ability to cruise made it cool. Not sure they can pull off the same type of event in S.D. The other BIGGER issue will be that very few NorCal residents will go due to cost of renting hotels, etc... Me and about 100 other people I know used to go up for the day and head home to sleep in our own beds. I'm just not seeing S.D. being able to pull this off. Besides, 20+ years of tradition and they move it just like they did the Oakland Roadster show...what gives?

It's going to be in Long Beach, NOT San Diego.

Got it...my bad. Question still applies. How do they expect 230,000 people and 20,000 hot rods to gather in a location where wide open spaces like Reno's casino alley don't exist?

Yeah, I forgot about that. Didn't they UP the price significantly for participants? Greed...plain and simple...couldn't leave well enough alone.

Pretty much like all the shows that have continued to grow. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ drive all decisions.

I just looked on their site - I think it's still in Reno august 9-14, but they added the Long Beach show on the 3rd. $150 bucks to get in does seem a little steep though, considering I usually stay at any car show for about an hour.

After being on the waiting list for four years ( I signed up when I was living in SoCal),
    I finally got accepted.
I couldn't believe it when they wanted $170.00 for ONE years entry!
The can go anywhere they want with this event...but, I just wish this money grubbing
so-called non-profit organization would just leave Reno... and never come back!

side-bar: to volunteer your time to work this event, they charge the
    VOLUNTEERS $40.00 per year...

I think the venue changed promoters a few years ago and it seems that it has gone downhill since then. I remember it being a lot more fun and the auctions and different vendor venues being more professional and better put together. The infusion of gangs disrupting the event and the money grubbers have changed it for sure...

The hot rodding community here is alive, and a pretty cool scene from what I've seen so far...

H.A.N. does NOT represent us, and is giving this area a bad name. Other/alternative events are in the works. One of the coolest is the Rebel Reunion, a free week long series of home grown shows, concerts, and cruises the week before (yech) Hot August Nights.

The sad thing is that when I first started going in the late 80's it wasn't as commercialized and there weren't as many crack-downs by the local PD and gangs were unheard of. I guess this is a good 'ol days rant... sorry.

These ARE the good ol' days, we just have to make em' that way..

  18. You complain about the show being moved to San Diego, and wonder if they can "pull it off"...San Diego is the seventh largest city in the USA...of course they could "pull it off"....Long Beach is also huge.;)

Then you cough up the info that there is a gang problem in it's current location. What other crap is going on there that are you not telling us about? Nobody is going to move such a large event without motivation. If it's greed, so what? That's capitalism, and what this country is based on. If you think it's worth keeping up there, start your own show...

  19. Pay attention, man....you'll get the hang of this place eventually.

I live here (in Reno NV. the events current location). Buzznut lives in Northern California.
It has been well documented, that the gangs that came here to Reno, and caused the problems in the past, where from the Bay area and San Jose CA. Yes, we have have gangs here, but they were not the ones that caused problems.
As far as your comment: "That's capitalism, and what this country is based on."
    Aren't you from Canada?
If you will look at my earlier postings, you will see that the rodders here are putting together alternative show/events to H.A.N.
Hot August Nights Inc. does NOT represent this community, and they are giving the area a bad name with their money-grubbing ways.

  21. You think Canada does not have an economy based on capitalism? Might be a good idea to study a little bit about the world around you before commenting haphazardly about it. Try this, my friend...

Facts can be your friend, too...

If I don't enjoy a particular show, I don't attend. It's really pretty simple...:) You might try it yourself sometime.

Hey buddy, if yer' in the Reno/Sparks NV. area, please come to our club's show that we started up as an answer to Hot August Nights. Our show is FREE entry, and ALL of the proceeds go to our club's charitable organization, the "American Heart Association".

"Classic Rods for Healing Hearts" car show to benefit the American Heart Association on June 25th in Sparks/Reno NV.

We have tried very hard to keep it FREE REGISTRATION!!! That would be NO entry fee for car owners, no fee for spectators, and FREE music by live bands at the show!

***Does this sound like your kinda car show? ***

This thing has just gotten huge, what with John Ascuaga's Nugget Casino backing us, and the hottest nightclub in Sparks "The Alley" holding a pre-party show on Fri. night and an after party show on Sat. night. with the Cowbelleros and the Infamous Swanks playing (some of the best punk/rock-a-billy bands around here).
This is going to be a real car culture event.
So put it on your calendar now for a great time!

So what have you done in your area (Canada) lately?

  25. Perfect! Since you wanted something a bit different, you put the effort into organizing and putting one on. Good for you! I hope others here on the HAMB will quit whining about shows, and follow your lead. That is an outstanding accomplishment, and a wonderful cause you are involved with....:)

i've always wanted to go to h.a.n., never had the extra time or money. but everyone here on the hamb should check out the northwest motorfest. it's in garden city idaho, in the 2nd week of july. very good show, 100ft drags, burnout contest, controlled cruise in downtown boise, among other events. search the web, and check out the previous motorfest shows. i still want to go to h.a.n's, wouldn't drive to cali for it though.

Hope it works out for ya'll,
so that way H.A.N. Inc. will stay in California,
...and get the hell out of Nevada.
