79' Chevy small block rear main seal (2 bolt main). After leaking a quart on the way to Temple, I figure it's time to replace it. Do I have to pull the crank or just the cap? Thanks for the info in advance guys.
I have heard that its easier if you loosen all the Mains so the Crank drops a little. I have only done it once and I got it in without loosening the rest up, but it does make sense.
It's not bad of a job at all really. I would loosen the caps though like he suggested. Besides might as well re-torque them while the pan is off anyway.
Also just a tip, when you install the new 2 peice rear main seal, offset it about a 1/4 inch,..keeps em from blowin out again...
I did it without loosening all of the main bearing caps. The new seal will slide in pretty easy. There comes a little piece of plastic with every new seal which helps you shoehorning the new bearing seal in place.
