Her is an interesting side trip if you are going to autorama. Why not go to hitsville, the home of Motown records. This is where it all began. It's at 2648 West Grand blvd. They have a web page www.motownmuseum.com I get nothing out of this, but you will never be closer than when your at cobo hall. Later Russ&Irene
I don't think I would get out of my car in that area. I am going to drive down to Auburn indiana and see the Auburn museum and the museum that has Carl Caspers cars. Been to the GM Heritage and that is cool, plus the Henry Ford has redone the auto display. The Ford pickup assembly plant tour is worth it. Learn how they glue your car together. Thats it for me.
Most of the riff/raff in that area is gone now. I'd park a rental car there but not a rod/showcar. I worked down there just a few blocks away for almost 20yrs between late 60s/80s. Road tested cars by there almost daily and never stopped. I dont remember if they gave tours back then, they were still making records there. Its all about attitude around there. Act like youve been there before and you know what your doing.
oh come on now... I have been to detroit for the auto rama several years in a row now and have been all over that city, and while it may not be warm and fuzzy, act like you got some sense (and carry a firearm like a proper southerner should) and you will be just fine. I have yet to have to even come close to having a problem. Now that said, check out the Henry Ford Museum too! It's quite awesome, just make sure you set aside some time to dig through it, its expansive to say the least
i love when someone 600+ miles away slams the motor city. is it the best area? no. is it the worst? no. but thats ok we're used to gettin a bad rap from people who dont know better. would you jump in one of those un-american pieces of shit they build down that way and park it in some of the neighborhoods in atlanta?
Sorry, I did not want to turn this into a bash the" big D" post. I just wanted to point out how close you are to history that you can't get any place else. I'm 62 and I have seen Detroits good times and bad. I don't think it's any worse than any big town. Stop in -Mexican town for some good food. Irene and I stop every time we go to the casino up there. Later Russ
Spent quite a bit a time in Detroit myself with FordMotor and the Uaw ran the bars out Michigan Ave. and Lincoln Park back in the 70s and 80s it was safe but Downtown was a different story, but the last few times I was Downtown major police presence there now.BIG BIG differance
Also, a visit to the Piquette Ford plant. The second of Heny's plants where the assembly line started and the T beginnings. I understand they have cars of the era there and a tour.
I was at Hitsville 2 weeks ago...What a great time if Motown music is your thing. I got goose bumps standing in the Garage recording studio that monumental talent sang in. It is a quick field trip an hour is about it. Easy to park out in front and e-ways are close by....Went to Chrysler Auburn Hills afterwards...to see some Mopars..It was a great day. Greenfield Village is an all day trip with Henry Ford Museum... Safe????? I never thought about it.
i dont think it was you that turned it into a bash detroit thread. i live here, i love the city. i've been to the motown museum many times. i will drive my hotrod down oakwood/fort st., to washington down atwater and in the back door of cobo wednesday. it's the motor city, it has its good and its bad, like anywhere. see you all there.
