Hot Rods Sid Chavers Bop Top

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by hotrodtodd1960, Jul 2, 2020.

  1. What makes you think that?

The current caretaker of the ‘Ol Blue ‘29 Hiboy is Billy B’s daughter (& son in law) ... I’ll can ask her (or him) to confirm it’s an actual BopTop™ ... and not a custom top that Sid made special for the roadster.

Thanks for extra info update HEMI32.
I enjoy seeing how all tops are designed and done,It's been something I been looking at the designs of for a long time.
I put off adding a top to my roadster for many years, thinking it was to hard to do my self or too much $$$$. Tell I got enough ideas put together.
That's when I finally did something about my own top. Homemade was my only way ,an worked amazing well. I keep up with ideas as much as I can.
I even go back an add updates at times,to my "Homemade how to Top"

The top frame I mentioned in post #26 is made to fold up and nest at the rear of the cockpit like a stock "A", and IMO, when folded down, from the rear they look like Fido's ass:eek:
My plans for future use of this are to remove and hang from shop ceiling via rope hoist when not in use like a removable hardtop or a "Carson" top,w/o padding:cool:

  8. No one ever comes back after a bitch post to say yes its good or no its not it seems.
I really was not trying to speak against the top, I have seen quite a few of them on cars cruising the fair grounds and local (when I was still around local) hot dog stand cruises. I never saw one coming apart or flying off.

I would check in with Rod Tops also if I were you.
They do very nice tops as well.

In building my 26 RPU I wanted a top made for it.
So before I took it apart for paint I put it in the trailer and hauled it to their shop in Michigan.

They built a very nice top for me.
The rear window is removable and I also had a set of side curtains made for it.

The problem with home made tops is that most look home made. The Chavers top is expensive but looks great.

Isn't the point of hotrodding to have it homemade?

  12. I like having the ability to fold the top down.:) Mine does not come up to often, but if I get caught out in the rain it is easy to fold it up quickly. I am going to try and redo the shape of my LB top at some point and also take another inch out of it. We will see if it works.

Here's a home made collapsible top frame on a Brookville '32 in my shop that a couple talented local guy's built probably borrowing some idea's from Sid's tops. Still trying to figure out what original builder was going to do about the roll bar rite behind where the rear window would go!

I am happy with mine, came with side curtains. I mostly drive without the top but longer runs put it on for the trip and off at the event. Mine came with side curtains but didn't get the opening rear window. Not sure that was available back in 2012.

I'd buy speedways top bow assy. and make my own. Sid's are nice but $3000 by the time you get it on. Have a shop sew up a top on the bows you buy. The 29's to me are way to high.
