I'm sorry to be a downer on this subject, but I could never understand the big deal about getting someones autograph. Once we were in a crowded elevator with a famous actor. When he got out on his floor my wife jokingly said to me "why didn't you ask for his autograph". I replied "why, he didn't ask me for mine". The whole elevator broke out in laughter. A shirt is he last place I would want someone to sign, why ruin a good shirt?

I have a number of other autographs besides the five I posted. I like autographs because of the memories that accompany them. Dean Jefferies was a nice guy and did some work for me, John Mazmanian was a friend, and we were in the same industry. Rodney Agajanian was the same. Jess Tyree, Doug Thorley...Like I said, memories.
At the GNRS Years ago I saw Alex Xydius and told my wife she should ask for an autograph so she walked up to him and said: "my husband said you were somebody famous and I should get your autograph.". He laughed and we chatted for a while.
Many of the people are gone now, but I have memories.

And besides, after riding motorcycles for over fifty years, many jurisdictions have asked for my autograph.

  3. Autographs mean different things to different people, seeing Dean Lowes roadster pickup on hot rod magazine is what sparked my interest in hot rods, that was my very first Hot Rod Magazine and after all these years I found that very issue in a box of books and magazines when clearing out my parents home.

Realizing that Dean is a member here I reached out in a conversation and ask him if he would autograph my magazine, I sent it to him and he returned it in a few days.

I had autographs from Bruce Crower, Fred Offenhauser, Jerry Jardine, Bob Wyman, Harry Weber, Els Lohn and at least a dozen other pioneers in the speed equipment industry. However, they were on a checks to pay for services rendered!

  7. One of my prized possessions, Bobby Allison's hat from his 1983 Southern 500 Victory!
Mom and Dad saw him coming out of the press box and asked if he would hold me for a photo, I was just under two years old. I reached out and started playing with his hat he handed it to me. After a few minutes Dad said, "Give Bobby his hat back." Instead
Bobby autographed it and put it on my head!

The Street Rodder road tour stopped at my place probably 5 years in a row. Usually 80 or so people each year , it happened on back to the fifties weekend. Most of the people that stopped were real nice and a lot of them sent me thank you cards in the mail afterwards. One of them came from Herb McCandless (I had no idea he was here until I got his card in the mail) I called him to thank him for going to the trouble of sending a card, I bet we talked on the phone for an hour. Wish I would have known that "mr. 4 speed" was here!!

I use to get all my Turbo Action stuff from Herb in the 80s. He was the only one who could get it. He knew who I was, I was the only Chevy guy buying parts from him! Used to have fun busting each other's balls! Hell of a guy!

  14. Ref: Your thank you note from Herb McCandless:

In his last sentence he states that "the lawn mowers were really special". The fact that he was left with such a lasting memory of them speaks volumes of both you and Mr. McCandless.

And that's all I'm going to say about that! :D

  16. My copy of "The Devil at Your Feet" signed by Brain Darwas all members of the (at the time) Burbank Choppers and the Alter Boys when they were in Englishtown N.J. for Mel Stulz East meets West drag race event.

For some reason Keith Weesner was not at the event I met him a few years later at the 2013 Race of Gentlemen, I didn't know he was going to be there and asked if sent him the jacket in the case to keep it form getting crumpled would sign it. He agreed.

When I got in back, I discovered not only had he singed it but he also had done a little doddle of himself inside the jacket.

Been dragging this shirt around for a while. Wanted autographs from the guys I read about in Hot Rod in the 60's and 70's. I've had some real fun with it. Bob Muravez AKA Floyd Lippencott JR. is usually working the T-shirt tent at the CHRR, I made mention to him what I was doing and told him with the passing of time I could not recognize some of the old heroes of drag racing, MR. Muravez told me to come back later when he was not so busy with the T-shirt sales and he'd I.D. some folks for me, I did and he did! A real gentleman. It was a good afternoon.

    Thames Dash
Ed Kohler sat in car National Trails, was asked to inspect and authenticate if body was an original Contemporary Fiberglass Body. (EK - Yes)

Jim Shores and Chuck Finders all present.

I visited Fiberglass Dave California (rip) made me a dash as a gift while I was in Valley, and promised me a 2 hole Grille for my Thames like them Simple Simon. Unfortunately months later, the grill got dropped off at a body shop, where I barely knew the owner. He got in a pissing match with guy delivering Anglia parts to him over gas money, kept my one off nose piece.

    1937 Tahitian Red Chevy C/Gas + B/Gas 1957-60

    Hello,

When I saw Mike Cook at the original Lion’s Dragstrip Museum grand opening day/night in 2017, I had to have a conversation with him for more information on the early Chevy and if it will one day get resurrected to racing status. He was very friendly and started out rambling about the
    upload_2023-12-28_2-47-21.png
I showed him the films I had taken of his dad’s 37 Chevy and one my brother took of me and Doug Cook’s Chevy coupe in the pits from 1959. He was totally impressed with the films. So, turned and got a photo of the SWC coupe racing and autographed it right then. Then he continued to give me details of the rebuild and the possible future of the 37 coupe of his dad. I told him I would send him digital copies of all of my Lion’s Dragstrip films from 1957 to 64 for his files and a link to the J Naki channel on You Tube.

Lion’s Dragstrip pits with a curious teenager wandering around.

When I told Mike Cook about me sending him his own digital version of the Lions Drag Racing Films, he was ecstatic. He now had the digital version of his dad’s build, racing from the earliest film period to the last one in 1960. Plus, the rest of our early film library for his computer files.

Nice original photo and signature for authenticity... Thanks, M.

Mike Cook was very informative. His information on the Willys and other builds was enlightening.
He gave me his original copy of the famous “drag race” at Pomona that most have seen on the web.
In a way, I wish I had left my "mic" on to record the whole conversation.

It was probably about 12-15 years ago I was at a car show. I was in line to get an autograph from Cindy Williams and Bo Hopkins. Henry Winkler was hanging around the area and saw my kids poking each other in the eyes. He came over and told them to be careful and not to poke out their eyes because eyes are very delicate. By the time I had something to to get his autograph on he was gone.

I don't have any pictures right now but I got autographs from Cindy Williams, Bo Hopkins and Paul LeMat. Got a picture of my son and I with Dennis Franz from NYPD Blues.

FYI: He still drives to the BTT50's with the group that was part of old the SR road tour. Got to sit next to him and his wife while we had breakfast at Andie's last year. Cool guy.
