Disclaimer: Grind white walls at your own risk. Some folks know this to be dangerous. That now being said, I cant make up my mind... I've always loved the look of wide whites ; And I know-I know, www's were pretty much phased out by '62 (year of the car in question) But I trashed one of my tires so I decided to try out grinding the ww...Turned out pretty F'n rad! I didn't go as wide as I could have, I like this width. I've seen some cars that didn't fit the www era that looked great with them! I found a cheap set of used tires in good shape, should I grind 'em, or leave 'em skinny??? Let me know what you think.
honestly i think they might look a little goofy on the car. I like wide white walls but not on anything after about 60.
What you have above would look great on a '62 and would still be period correct. Full-on wide whitewalls would look goofy, but that's not what you have there. I'd also sand off the lettering in the black wall area for a clean look, the modern lettering gives these away as being modern tires.
Right, they aren't straight up "gangster whites"... just wider than skinny whites. I agree 3" ww's would look goofy. Squablow, Thanks for the tip on smoothing out the blackwall, that'd look slick.
Back in the early 60's they went from wide white to what I use to call "wide narrows" because the white wall started about an inch or two from the rims but they were still bigger then what you now have. Look at some of the car ads from the early 60's and you see just how they changed.
Great idea! The car on the bottom is a Monterey (like mine) and its got the same size whitewall I ground.
I'm all for grinding WWW to make a set. But on you car I think they would out of place. Bottom line it's your car, do what you want.
If you grind them they won't be super wide! Try a old tire & see how you like it, Its your ride.I did mine & the WW isn't from the rim to the edge, it leaves a little at the bottom & about mid way thru the letters( sometimes!!lol) JimV PS If you get a dremel you can grind a small line at the top & the bottom of the WW & see how far it goes, if its too much you can just go over it with a Sharpie in black.
That's what I did on the last set of whitewalls I made, and it makes a huge difference. If the letters aren't too tall, an 80 grit disk on the DA works great. If the letters are real thick, sometimes you have to grind some meat off of them first.
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess no one has ever called you "Mr Positive". Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
You should've done a tech on how you ground the sidewall and got it looking so neat and tidy. I say grind em. Scotty.
I've got supremes on my Ford, I wanted something a little different for the Merc. And thanks. They look nice but I've been advised to stay away from them. There is a thread on here somewhere of some guys grinding ww's. There are also a couple videos on Utube. If I can find 'em I'll post the links. I'll do a tech if you'd like, but I know how some folks feel about starting a new thread that's been covered before. Maybe I'll just add to the old one.
Shit those look real good, I can see em rolling those in 62 63 easy. Forget about those janky ass port a walls, what you have looks way better !
