Shoebox guys: What steering wheels will directly mount to a 51 Ford?

I am doing a 51 Ford 2 door sedan and absolutely HATE the stock steering wheel. I figured a 49 - 50 wheel would work but was recently told it may not.

Does anyone know this for sure? What options do I have to directly mount to the stock column? What other wheels have the same spline? I don't have a TON of money but would step up a little for the right wheel.

    Any insight is greatly appreciated.

I've been told both of those are different as well.

  4. It's just tapered and splined isn't it? I have a '49 Ford wheel on the F-1 column in my '34 Chevy. Weird huh?

I had to remove the spline center out of my 51 Ford wheel and weld it into the 51 lincoln wheel to fit the 51 Ford column.

ANY Ford or Lincoln wheel from the early 50s on up..You need a tapered and splined wheel, the earlier key way style won't work without modification..

Hudson used the same spline as the F-100 and the 57 Mercury.

  11. Crestline - a little pricey though!

  12. probably have to worry about directional lights if you used the earlier steering wheel

  13. The 49-50 wheel won't fit on the '51 column becuse of the signal light housing. If you want a for sure answer, why not contact Chris at Shoeboxford.com. These cars are all he deals in.

That sounds a good way to solve this problem.I have a 51' automatic column and a spline donor 51' wheel, which is far away from mint condition.I need to find good looking wheel from somewhere.Any suggestions?

  16. I went out of my way to mount a 51 Meteor wheel to the aftermarket gm styled column. I don't think they are ugly at all.
