Re-doing the shock setup on the back of my 37 GMC and looking for some input on travel in rebound and compression. I have about 15 inches to work with as far as distance between mounts. Is 3 inches in compression and 2 in rebound going to work? Using the origonal leaf springs with 3 leafs removed out of 8 and 1500 lbs of weight on the rear.

How far is the top of the axle from the frame when the car is level?
    That is the max compression.
Jack the chassis and get the wheels off the ground. Measure that to the axle.
Jack one side up and measure that to the axle. There may be a difference.
You need a shock that will not bottom out or reach full extension.
Monroe has an online catalog that shows all shocks with diagrams and specs.
    Go to:

click on mounting and length sheets.
