I have an Autogear 4 speed in my Model A coupe. With the engine off, the 1-R and R-1 shift is smooth. 1-2, 2-3 and 3-4 are also smooth.

With the engine running, 1-R and R-1 are damn near impossible. 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 are smooth.

The trans ran smooth in another coupe with another shifter.

We've played with the linkages to no avail.

    Thoughts? Remedies?

    The clutch needs adjustment.

On that note, does it grind mildly when you try reverse?

Yep, Autogear 4 speed basiclly looks like a Muncie. It has a reverse sliding gear.

Never even heard of an "autogear". What did they come in?

Sounds like a slight clutch adjustment is in order. Reverse needs a full disengagement, if not it will hang and/or grind.
