Hi guys I hope someone can help with this matter 1950 0BA flathead, rebuild, rebuild carbs 3 deuce intake. Cannot get it to start..... Can someone please give step by step on how set timing on freshly rebuilded engine?? spark is present, fuel also (but i think carbs flood a little) Compressio circa 110 psi on every cylinder. I`ve set Cyl 1 on TDC and distributor to fire. I have magnetic pickup distributor (procomp with CDI unit from speedwaymotors) Please help. Thank you
Does your 8ba have a front mount or side mount distributor?? Before all this discussion starts I want you remember an important item. Be absolutely sure you change your oil after you get it fired up. You will have a ton of gas in it.
There are several good threads on finding TDC on a flathead including 8BA's. Start there is most "timely" advice.
If you set it on TDC on the number 1 cylinder and its not trying to start you are probably 180 out, try turning it 180 and see if that helps.
It's side mount distributor. Yes, thank you, I know gas is in oil now after lot of cranking. How come can be right hand side when every book, picture on Internet shows front left side when looking from the front of the engine. I've set dot to dot crank/cam and distributor to fire. Must be right Sent from my ALE-L21 using H.A.M.B. mobile app
I know you drive on the wrong side of the road over there, but when you're behind the wheel, the right side is ....to your right, the same side the distributor is on, correct?
Heheh ;-) OK we all know where is it. Call it passenger side for left hand drive cars. (I'm actually from Poland so I used to drive on the right side before) Sent from my ALE-L21 using H.A.M.B. mobile app
Is 2psi fuel pressure OK? What can cause flood? Sparks are black I guess there is excessive fuel in cylinders Sent from my ALE-L21 using H.A.M.B. mobile app
Yes the fuel pressure is perfect. Your engine should at least fire one time on one cylinder even if your carb has the wrong size jets and you have clean spark plugs. Id start out electrical. You said the plugs spark but does the engine at least fire on one cylinder? Did you have to rotate the distributor?
I will say like that. When i leave it for few minutes, and start cranking, than the engine is about to fire, loads of black smoke comes out and than you can crank forever without result. Every now and then I can hear that the cylinder fire but it's not every time. I only have flexplate behind at the moment. Would that be a case? Not enough weight at the back? Oh and before I put facet pump I had holley, and 6 psi pressure Sent from my ALE-L21 using H.A.M.B. mobile app
Tell us about your carbs...... 3 deuce maybe too much fuel ? Have your plugs fouled ? Blank off two end carbs, change my to new plugs and see if there is a difference.
.030 gap is ok? Spark plugs are brand new. Just soft black residue on them. Carbs are 3 deuce setup, overhauled. Bought master rebuild kit from vintage speed. Not sure about jet sizes but the all the same on all 3 carbas. Sent from my ALE-L21 using H.A.M.B. mobile app
Flexplate should be fine. Here's one way to isolate the problem: drop linkage from front and rear carb, block off fuel line, clean plugs, make a gas squeeze bottle--- NOT a pour bottle and give the center carb a small squirt of gas and try to crank. If it fires a couple cylinders re-prime and have bottle ready to dribble gas in to keep it running. If it back fires and lights bottle don't throw it down, just blow it out. If this works you now know the carbs are wetting down the plugs.
No you're flex plate will not effect your engine running. What size jets are you running? What size power valve if a Holley 94? There's a lot of rebuild kits out there that are poor quality. Who rebuilt these for you and did they use good kits? 90% of the time three carbs are too much for a flathead.
Update. It's definitely fuel problem. Engine fired up on one carb and 1 psi fuel but it cannot keep going on its own also starts only with the throttle wide open and button on starter motor otherwise cannot stay on. I bought kit from vintage speed and I have no idea what jets and power valve they have. It was default master kit. Sent from my ALE-L21 using H.A.M.B. mobile app
Definitely block off the center carb with a flat piece of sheet metal between your carb and intake. Then pull the outer carbs off and check your jet and power valve size. Time to dive right in. Here's some good rebuild articles. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/links-to-holley-94-technical-info.286574/
What I do, I'll take them all off and put them on white rag with fuel pump on to see if they leak or something. I already have somewhere like 4 gallon of gas in oil.... Bought new oil already. Sent from my ALE-L21 using H.A.M.B. mobile app
Didn`t have chance to strip the thing down, but found a bag from the kit. All 3 carbs has the same kit fitted and it saying H-105 .D51 jets 7.5PV
Here's a place to start. Please read the links I've provided above also. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/index.php?threads/Need-help-in-setting-up-Dual-carbs.183084/
I've started new thread as this no longer relates to ignition. Here is a topic with video I made http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/index.php?threads/1011183/ Holley 94 flooding (video) Sent from my ALE-L21 using H.A.M.B. mobile app
The 7.5 power valves are too high. I am running 3.5's on a dual carb setup. You may have to go lower if with 3 carbs.
Thanks for all your support. PROCOMP cdi box is simply crap. i`ve disconnected it and put old coil and distributor. fired no proble.
