Technical Seriously: muffler grease ?

  2. I had never-seized the exhaust manifold flange bolts on my '65 Belair. Three years later the engine was coming out and the stuff was still evident on the threads.

    That's on the boost side, on the intake side. I take it that they work well on the exhaust side as well.
     
  4. I have used anti-seize with good success. It is not as likely to burn away as grease.

    When I worked in a muffler shop back in the 70's all we had was oxy-acetylene torches. I never encountered a muffler I couldn't remove by heating the dogshit out of the slip joint with a torch. We'd use the cutting attachment because you could get more heat out of it. Just heat the slipjoint till it glows cherry-red (muffler clamp removed and cut any tack weld, of course) give the muffler a little jiggle, rotate, and pull it off. Of course, this is a little dicy to do if you're laying on your back under a car, but if you have a lift, or a pit like we did, it's a piece of cake. Mind you, this was in Fort Dodge, Iowa where road salt was used profusely in the winter, and before aluminized exhaust pipe became the standard, so we were dealing with cases as tough as it got.
