Checking in, with just over two weeks till the Red Dust Revival I figure why not tear my engine apart and fit this unknown head, It's only sitting on the block in this picture to check fit.

I have the option on either a composite gasket or a copper one, any recommendations on which to use?

Turned out pulling the head was probably the right thing to do as it looks like the old gasket was only a couple of laps away from failing, Yikes!

Failing...?! Hate to break it to you, but that gasket already failed... it just hadn’t told you yet!;)

Glad you found the gasket failure before it left you stranded somewhere, and glad to see you lining up that new head. Hope you make it stick, it looks good on there!

I’m not sure if one is better than the other, but I’m swapping mine out in the next month or two and plan on using the graphite/composite one from best gasket.
I used one in the past with no issues, but don’t know long term how they hold up since I didn’t keep the car.

    Good catch
I prefer the Best graphite gasket but have no aluminum head experience with them
I always torque all head fasteners and let sit overnight
Retorque and run/idle the engine with no coolant until can't touch the head comfortably by hand
Retorque and let cool until it reaches ambient temperature. Retorque
    Then fill with coolant
I usually recheck torque after a few more heat/cool cycles

I didn’t think about an aluminum head might be better off with one vs the other.
Anybody care to expand on that idea?
The last two heads I had were cast iron, the new one is aluminum.
Now I’m thinking again on then graphite one. Might go copper as V4F suggested

  21. Might be an old tale but I thought you never used copper gaskets with aluminum heads. Something to do with mixed metals and corrosion.

    Present!

Absolutely nothing accomplished in August. Completely consumed by work. Not even a weekend drive.

That’s going to have to change in September.

    Hope you all are well.

@johnneilson - thanks for directing me to Jim Brierley for my camshaft. I think I’ve settled in on the right grind and will probably order soon.

I ran sandwich copper gaskets for several years, then solid copper for several years, now run a composite for the last several years. All this has been under an aluminum Sherman head with no signs of corrosion at the surfaces. I ran green antifreeze for a number of years, but have been running the red stuff for a while now. Only difference I can tell between the coolants... is the taste! (No windshield;))

My choice of gaskets is simpler than you might expect... big valves require cutting and reshaping the copper sandwich gaskets (PITA!). Solid copper is whatever shape I want it to be... but not the easiest gasket to seal (aerosol Hylomar). I have found the steel ring composite gaskets to be the easiest to modify. Simply peel back the fire ring a bit and remove. Trim the composite with tin snips, reshape the fire ring, then reassemble with the aid of a small body hammer

I am still here ! Got a fair bit done this month, all engine and gearbox mounts finished ,manual clutch /hydraulic brake conversion bracket fabricated and all painted ready to re install .Some pics for interest but nothing amazing! One thing I realised when I was painting the bracket-I have had that crate for more than 40 years!! 20220818_165011.jpg 20220822_121132.jpg 20220824_171352.jpg

Well the head is on and torqued, went with the composite gasket in the end. Didn't get to fire it up as I'm running an original distributor and due to plug placement the standard connectors are too short. I did flatten some copper water pipe, split it and made some but they turned out too big and ugly. I'll chase down some brass shim stock or possibly a modern cap conversion.
