Technical Seperating a '39 trans from a ford flathead

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by 1931fordtruck, Apr 23, 2014.

  1. I'm trying to seperate the trans from the flathead. The trans spins freely. Any suggestions?

Remove the starter. Remove the bolts around the bellhousing. Pull.

    Memphis T. likes this.
  3. Do what alchemy says, then push the clutch in if it's still hooked up. Should pop out.

  4. The starter is off. I tried using a pry bar, very lightly, while pushing in the clutch and no luck.

The splines on the imput shaft are probably rusted to the clutch disc

Try whacking the case with a rubber or wooden mallet. Something is rusted together.

Tread lightly for you don't want to hit it so hard that you knock a hole in the case, but a little jarring should free up those rusted splines.

Squirt some god penetrating oil like T/f & acetone mixed 50-50 on the splines for a couple days. Should work

Pull the throw out inspection cover off and hit it really good with some penatrant .. Let it sit .. Worst i ever encountered was a siezed 324 olds and 39 trans I had to cut the block and remove all the clutch bolts from the flywheel.. Then I had to cut the disc off the imput shaft .. If your motor spins you can probably pull the pan and do it that way..

  10. Now that the trans is separated from the flathead, can I adapt it to my banger motor?

Yes, Clings makes an adapter and kit for that.

  12. I will check it out. Can you give any tips on the do's and do not's?

I'm missing something here. Going from a 3 speed to a 3 speed?
