So I recently put a set of screw in Moon discs on my 56. They are the standard three hole discs. I've been noticing a sound coming from my driver rear disc. It sounds like there is something rattling inside. I've checked and see nothing. So what I'm thinking is that there is a bit of disc vibration when driving. Has anyone run into a similar problem? If so, what did you find out? For whatever it's worth, I ran the plastic washers that Moon gives you between the wheel and the disc, so I know there is a gap, maybe a sixteenth to a quarter inch. Thanks, Matt
Been run'n old Moon disc on my coupe for two years. Don't think there are any strange sounds but car is fairly loud> I drilled my own holes and used sheet metal screws, no washers. Pontiac Slim
Yup, on a VW... Try a dab of silicone sealant(Permatex 16BR or equiv.) between the disc & wheel every 6 inches or so along the edge...
How tough is it to pull 'em off? Have you ever had any issues with air loss? I did put silicone on the screws before screwing 'em in, so I'm hoping there won't be any loss. Well there hasn't been any yet . . .
Yeah, that's the one thing I did do. So I'm gathering that I could pull the plastic washers off . . .
I had them on my Datsun truck back in the good old days. drilled and tapped the rim and used 10-32 button head allens. I had nothing between the rim and the disc, never had a noise or a problem in 20 -30 thousand miles. drill and tap.
I had had moon disc in the past and yeah,,I have heard the clicking sound,,,usually they are loose,,,probably the plastic washer moving slightly. I drilled my rims and used a total of 6 screws. HRP
I've used vaccume line to make washers, and let the silicone dry before install just to form a spacer.
I have had them on my lowered 2003 E 250 van for 135,000 miles. I've been through 2 sets of discs. The first set the holes got so oblonged that the screws started to pull through. I even put some big plastic washers on 'em from Lowes. They move alot. Washers behind, on top, screws tight, the whole gig. The only way that they havn't made noise is when I siliconed them on. Trying to get them off later was a different story. I bent the bejesus out of them getting them off. They did straighten back out after I got them off pretty easily. I have just come to grips, that they are some cool hub caps, but they are not low maintenence. Don
Yes to all of the above haha! I always use 10-32 self tapping machine screws and run 6 instead of three. I add extra holes in the disc's 1/2 to 3/4 inch from the original holes. having the screws paired seems to solve the problems. never had plastic washers but bet they would help too!
Drill and tap some more screws or its time to straight pipe it and say... what rattling ??.. -Anthony
I got sick of the drill/tap method and also had the rattle problem. I used the permatex method untill I put a new set of tires on, when the tire changes had the old rummer off the truck I snaked the rims back from em and stopped by the hardware store, I picked up some countersunk cap screws and some lock nuts, tapped the hole, countersunk the area on the tire side with a drill bit, ran the screws in so the remaining stud stuck out on the cap side, welded the allen hole shut as well as tacking the screw into the rim, smoothed everything out on the bead side and used the lock nuts with a washer to hold the caps on. Just make sure you dont cross thread and your in there like swim wear! Kinda hard work for not a whole lot of gain BUT no rattles and the caps have been in place for 5 years with no leaks or tossed screws
