I think there is a bellhousing that fits with the small bp for the trans and 6 bolts for the engine but it has been a long time since i had any thing to do with that I know for a fact that the other way around is doable 3-4 spd 60s trans on a 8BA
You can bolt a pre 65 289 up to the 49 to 53 trans but I would just install the post 65 3 speed trans along with the newer sbf if you want to retain the original column shifter.
Another option is to use a scattershield. They will usually have both the early and late trans bolt patterns on them.
